Thirty small and medium enterprises (SMEs), 100 retailers, 150 market women and 600 young people will directly benefit from the project through various training programmes under the project which is expected to widen the tax net of the assembly, increase revenue mobilisation and promote local economic development.

Under the arrangement, the assembly is expected to provide a counter funding of £87,510.

Two bodies, the Organisation for Livelihood Enhancement Services (OLIVES) and the Free World International (FWI), are facilitators of the project.

Proposal

The Bibiani-Bekwai District Assembly and the Adentan Assembly in the Greater Accra Region were selected for the project out of the 216 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the country.

The District Coordinating Director of the Bibiani-Anhwiaso- Bekwai District Assembly, Mr John Nana Owoo, said at the launch of the project at Bibiani that the two assemblies’ proposals met the criteria set by the EU and were thus selected at a stakeholders meeting in Kumasi.

The Project Director, Mr Dickson Baidoo, said the project sought to provide technical and financial support to actors in the agricultural value chain, especially women.

A well-furnished office has been secured to regulate and facilitate the scheme.

Appreciation to EU

The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso, who is also the President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, expressed his appreciation to the EU for its role in economic empowerment of Ghanaians and the overall development of the country.

He charged managers of the scheme to ensure efficient and judicious use of the funds to help the youth.
