Denkyira Traditional Council swears in ‘nyimfahene’

The Abuakwahene, Daasebre Oduro Akenten II, has been sworn in as the Nyimfahene of  the Denkyira Traditional Council in the Central Region.

Daasebre Akenten, 61, is known in private life as Kofi Amankrah, an Obuasi-based businessman.

Before his swearing-in, Daasebre Akenten was carried in a palanquin through the principal streets of Jukwa, the capital of the Denkyira Traditional Area, where the omanhene’s (paramount chief’s) palace is located.

Swearing the oath of allegiance to the Omanhene, Odeefoo Boaponsem III, Daasebre Oduro Akenten expressed gratitude for the honour done  him and pledged his commitment towards assisting the council to develop the area.

He called on all the chiefs in the area to bury their differences and unite for the maintenance of peace and to promote growth in the traditional area.

He noted with disappointment the falling standard of education in the area due to galamsey activities, stressing that most of the schoolchildren had dropped out to engage in illegal mining.

He added that the situation had affected enrolment in all schools in the area, especially public basic schools, and promised to work assidiously to ensure  significant improvement in the academic performance of the various schools.

According to him, the 17 illegal  miners who died recently at Kyekyewere were from Abuakwa and, therefore, appealed to the government to show more commitment towards clamping down on galamsey activities in the country.

He stressed that the Offin River had been polluted due to the activities of the illegal miners, and called for a halt to galamsey activities close to the river.

He alleged that some chiefs in the area were behind the activities of illegal miners and, therefore, urged  the government to act upon a petition he had presented to help find solutions  to illegal mining in the area.

Daasebre Oduro Akenten also appealed to the government to compensate the bereaved families of the 17 miners who died in the galamsey pit at Kyekyewere.
