CSOs to deepen gender equality in Northern Region

Some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working to promote gender equality and the rights of women and girls have met in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital to discuss how best they could jointly work together to promote and deepen  gender equality in the region.

The meeting was convened by Songtaba, a women and girls rights organisation working in the Northern region in partnership with Plan International Ghana under the Women's Voice and Leadership project and supported by Global Alliance Canada.

The two year project is aimed at promoting gender equality and the rights of women and girls.

The meeting held on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 in Tamale was attended by CSOs in the Northern region, the youth parliament, young urban women movement and northern youth advocates.

The Executive Director of Songtaba, Hajia Lamnatu Adam in her welcome address called for CSOs and youth groups to promote advocacy on unpaid care work of women and the overburdened house hold chores of girls which is affecting the empowerment of girls and women in the region.

She called for joint actions in the region and beyond to promote advocacy on gender equality through alliance building.

Hajia Lamnatu added that the Women's Voice and Leadership project is meant to contribute to promoting inclusion of women in decision making and changing stereotypes which discriminate on gender.

The Speaker of the Northern Regional House of Parliament, Mohammed Gaddafi pledged to use their parliamentary sessions to table such issues for discussion and also support woken in leadership, especially on sharing of gender roles among boys and girls.
