Changes in Police Service

The Police Administration has made changes to the Police Management Board (POMAB) with the appointment of Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr James Oppong Boanuh as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

The changes also saw some members of POMAB taking new responsibilities in the Police Command structure.

Until his appointment, Mr Oppong-Buanuh was the Director-General of Administration.

He becomes the fifth top officer to be appointed as Deputy Inspector-General of Police, following on the heals of Mr P. K. Acheampong, Mrs Elizabeth-Mills Robertson, Dr K. K. Manfo and Mr Mohammed Alhassan.

Deputy IGP

The Police Service Regulations, C.I. 76, provides for the appointment for a deputy IGP but the position has been lying vacant over the years.

Section 11 of the C.I. states that the membership of the Police Management Board consists of “the Inspector General of Police, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, schedule officers at the National Headquarters and any other senior police officer who may be co-opted from time to time and the Chief Staff Officer, who is the secretary”.

Section 13 sub-section one of the C.I. provides that “meetings of the management board shall be chaired by the IGP and in the absence of the IGP by the deputy inspector general, and in the absence of the deputy inspector general by the most senior Commissioner of Police present”.

Sub-sections three and four of that same section also states that “the IGP shall be assisted by the deputy IGP. The deputy IGP shall supervise, control, monitor and provide the day-to-day management of all schedules and command and shall report to the IGP”.

Other changes

For the other changes, a statement signed by the Director-General of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr David Eklu, said COP Mr Prosper Agblor is now the Director-General in charge of Legal and Prosecutions; COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare moves to Welfare, COP Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno moves to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, while COP Mr Nathan Kofi Boakye heads to Research and Planning, with COP Mrs Beatrice Vib-Sanziri taking over as Director-General of the Police Professional Standards Bureau.

It said COP Mr Yaagy Akuribah remains Director-General of the National Patrol Department, just as COP Rev. David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin remains Director-General, Special Duties.

It said COP Mr Maxwell S. Atingane moves from the MTTD to the Ghana Police Staff and Command College in Winneba, COP Mr Ken Yeboah takes over as Director-General, Administration, with the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) moving to take charge as Director-General, Operations, and DCOP Nana Asomah Hinneh heading to the Human Resource Department.

The statement said DCOP Mr Fred Adu-Anim takes over as Director-General of the Police Intelligence Department; DCOP Mr George Tuffour, Director-General, Finance; DCOP Mr Owusu Donyina as Second-in-Command, Finance, with DCOP Mr Patrick Atampugre taking charge as Director-General, National Protection Directorate, and DCOP Mr Samuel Monney, Technical.
