Assemblies urged to go all out in street naming exercise

Baba JamalThe Ministry of Local Government has asked all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to pull down all illegal structures as they embark on the street naming and property addressing project in their areas.

The deputy minister at the ministry, Alhaji Baba Jamal, who stated this, said  all illegal structures must be removed in the effort to bring sanity into  town planning.

“There should be no politics,” he stated, adding that while the illegal structures must go down, the assemblies must ensure that the exercise was not  used to victimise the people .

Alhaji Jamal was speaking at an orientation on street naming and property addressing system workshop for the districts in the Central Region. Personnel from  all the 20 districts in the Central Region attended the workshop.

The project will ensure that all streets in the cities and towns were  given names to ensure easy access.

Alhaji Jamal said the assemblies have 18 months to implement the project, stating that eight out of the 18 months were already gone.

He stated that the assemblies must ensure that the last 10 months were used for the effective implementation of the project adding that Ghana could not  be a middle income nation if we still could not get  the right direction to  places.

He noted that some of the districts which had already began implementing the project were about 95 percent complete and that the project was achievable.

“We have what we call ‘Lungus’. ‘Lungus’ are called alleys in developed countries and we are naming all the lungus,” he said.

He said the National Service Secretariat had promised to support the district assemblies with the relevant personnel for the project, and that no excuses would be accepted for inefficiencies.

He emphasised that the government would go beyond sacking of politically appointed persons and sack technocrats for inefficiencies on all projects including the street naming project.

“It is time we all took responsibility for our actions.”

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong said the  project was expected to increase the revenue generation in the districts and to help the security agencies enhance security in the communities.

Alhaji Jamal later presented logistics including printers, scanners and plotting devices for use for the exercise to  Mr Sarpong for onward presentation to the districts.
