Agogo Traditional Council denies harbouring Fulani herdsmen

The Agogo Traditional Council in the Ashanti Region has denied granting Fulani herdsmen the permission to allow their cattle onto the Agogo Stool Lands.

It has, therefore, called on the National Security agencies in the region to ensure that the Fulani herdsmen invading the Agogo Traditional Area were removed.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the Ntotoehene of the Agogo Traditional Council, Nana Kofi Sarfo Prempeh.

The statement said “the presence of the Fulani herdsmen in any area that falls within the Agogo Stool Lands does not have the consent of the Agogo Traditional Council or any agents of the council”.

“The impression must not be created that at any point in time the council has favoured the activities of the Fulani herdsmen,” it said.

Enforce court order

According to the statement, one key way to protect farmers from the illegal activities of the Fulani herdsmen from invading Agogo Stool Lands was for the security agencies within the region to enforce the court order for the eviction of the Fulani hersdmen.

“The Agogo Traditional Council hereby states that it supports any action taken by the people of Agogo whose farms and properties have been adversely affected by the activities of the Fulani herdsmen,” it said.

The statement, however, appealed to the Agogo community to refrain from politicising the Fulani menace, and rather urged them to work together with the traditional council to ensure that peace prevailed in the area.

Agogo Council unhappy

Recalling a court order issued on January 20, 2012 at the Kumasi High Court, the statement said the security agencies were instructed to carry out the eviction of the Fulani herdsmen.

“The Traditional Council further met with the Ashanti Regional Minister and REGSEC on the 8th and 14th of January 2015, and 27th May, 2015, when they visited Agogo on a fact-finding mission regarding the Fulani menace and promised to evict them.”

The statement said it was disappointed in the decision taken by the Ashanti Regional Police Command that the Agogo Fulani herdsmen matter did not fall within its purview.

“Our question is, is the Ashanti Regional Police Command not part of the National Security apparatus?” the statement asked.
