EsselMinister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovations, Dr Joe Oteng Adjei, has called on the management of the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)  to adopt innovative policies to attract consultancy services to generate revenue  for the institute.

Speaking at a workers durbar after being conducted round the institute’s facilities at Fumesua, near Kumasi, Dr  Oteng Adjei said the institute could only be  financially independent if the research works and consultancy services were channeled commercially to the institute instead of into private pockets at the expense of the institute.

Dr Oteng Adjei, accompanied by his deputy, Dr Musheibu Mohammed Alpha, was at the FORIG to acquaint himself with research activities of the institute and to identify the challenges that need to be addressed to enhance its research activities.

He said there was a need for scientists  to be innovative in order to create job opportunities by instituting partnership with other institutions to move the country forward.

Science institutions, Dr Oteng-Agyei said, should move from paper knowledge to creating wealth.

“What we are doing at the ministry now is to ensure that all CSIR institutions should be financially autonomous by the year 2016,” he said.

Technology and innovation, he said, would drive the economy of the nation, and that Ghana could not afford to play to the gallery.
