Adjabeng District Court ‘2’ closed down

The Judicial Service of Ghana has closed down the Adjabeng District Court ‘2’ in Accra on the directive of the Chief Justice, Ms Justice Sophia Akuffo.

The action, which took effect on June 7, 2019, came in the wake of the tour and inspection of court facilities in the Greater Accra Region by the Chief Justice in May this year.

All cases originally scheduled for hearing at the District Court ’2’ have consequently been transferred to the Adjabeng District Court ‘1.’

A statement signed by the Judicial Secretary, Ms Cynthia Pamela Addo, said the action was occasioned by the fact that the court “was in a deplorable state and was totally unfit for purpose”.

“At the District Court, Adjabeng, it was noted that the District Court ‘2’ was in a deplorable state and was totally unfit for purpose,” the statement added.

Regret

The statement further expressed regret at “any inconvenience this decision may cause to lawyers, court users and the general public”. It, however, assured stakeholders and members of the public that “this decision is in the best interest of all parties, and we count on their cooperation in this matter”.

It added that the closure of the Adjabeng District Court ‘2’ confirmed earlier observations by the Chief Justice, who, upon assumption of office, noted that some court buildings were in bad shape.

She had, in some cases, threatened to close down some courts if relevant local government authorities did not improve the facilities.
