Accident claims lives of 2 medical staff of Kumasi South Hospital

Two female medical staff of the Kumasi South Hospital lost their lives on Saturday in a vehicle accident in the Akyem Anyinase area of the Eastern region.

Dr Patience Fletcher, an eye specialist and Madam Philomena Kwayie, a Deputy Director of Nursing Services were said to have died on the spot when their vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner crashed with a mini bus.

A third person, Dr Boadu who is the medical director at the Kumasi South Hospital and the driver of the Fortuner sustained injuries and responding to treatment.

They were heading towards Akyem Wenchi for the final funeral rites of Dr Kofi Asare, a former Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), who himself died through a vehicle accident, in February 207.

Dr Asare after retirement went to Parliament as the representative of the people of Akwatia from 2009 to 2013.  

The driver of the mini bus with registration number GT 4921-15 was said to have lost control as a result of break failure and rammed into a Toyota Fortuner with registration number GT 6284 belonging to the Kumasi South Hospital.

In a related development, 15 people are feared dead in another accident which also occurred on Saturday at Okanta near Nsawam in the Eastern Region.

The accident involved a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
