80-year-old man burnt to death

An 80-year-old man was burnt to death at Jachie in the Bosomtwe District in the Ashanti Region when his room caught fire around 8 p.m. last Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as Agya Kwabena Adusa, who was blind and bedridden, was left to his fate when the fire started from his bedroom while he was sleeping.

Other occupants of the house, a storey building, escaped to safety.

According to some residents of the area where the incident took place, the fire started from the deceased’s bedroom, which was located upstairs, and spread to the other parts of the house.

They said efforts by people who were initially attracted to the scene to put out the fire were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the charred remains of Agya Adusa which were retrieved after personnel of the Chirapatre Station of the Ghana National Fire Service had put out the fire have been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for autopsy.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

However, a source told the Daily Graphic that he suspected that the fire might have been started by a lighted candle because there had been a blackout in the house at the time of the fire.

It said moments after the fire had started around 8 p.m., residents started making distress calls to the fire service but response came about an hour later.

“The old man was blind and bedridden and so he could not escape when the fire started. And because the fire started from his room, it was difficult for tenants and residents attracted to the scene to save his life,” the source said.
