3 Suspected kidnappers arrested in Tamale

Three members of a suspected kidnapping and robbery syndicate operating in the Northern part of Ghana have been arrested by the police in their hideouts in Tamale.

The suspects, Ussif Mohammed, 22; Sanda Mohammed, 23, and Mohammed Umar, 23, were picked up at three separate hotels they were lodging in Tamale upon intelligence.

They were said to have arrived in Tamale and planned attacks and kidnapping operations which were to be executed in Salaga, Makango, Bimbila and Wulensi areas.

Briefing the media in Tamale, the Northern Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr Timothy Yoosa Bonga, said on May 13, 2021, at about 6:27 p.m. the police picked up intelligence that the three suspected kidnappers and armed robbers believed to be part of a syndicate operating in the area had arrived in Tamale to plan for their operations.

He said a team of intelligence personnel from the command swiftly raided the hotels and apprehended the suspects.

He indicated that the police retrieved a machete, seven mobile phones, cash of GH¢5,861 and an amount of GH¢5,239 in their mobile money account.

COP Bonga added that investigators also retrieved videos of the suspects displaying cash bundles of 50 Ghana cedis notes in what appears to be booties collected from robbery scenes or otherwise of ransoms received from kidnapping activities.

He said the suspects could not explain the circumstances under which the money was obtained and also refused to lead the police to their places of abode for further information and investigations.

He, however, appealed to the general public to volunteer information to assist the police with investigations.

Meanwhile, the suspects are currently in police custody assisting in investigations and will appear before court on May 31, 2021.
