Steel factory shuts down due to high power tariffs

A steel factory in the Tema free zones enclave, Rider Steel Ghana Limited (RSGL), has been shut down due to what management describes as “high electricity tariffs.”

As a result, more than 350 workers of the factory have been laid off.

Former president John Mahama has commiserated with the families of the victims of the Kintampo Waterfalls tragedy.

Eighteen people have been confirmed dead in the incident after trees fell on them following heavy rains on Sunday. The victims were mostly students from the Wenchi Senior High School.

Mahama took to Twitter to console the bereaved families:

Inadequacies in judicial service affect justice delivery - Justice Dotse

A Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Jones Dotse, has expressed concern over some inadequacies in the judicial service which were affecting the effective administration of the judicial service in the country.

According to him, the Judicial Service of Ghana has for several years, experienced an inadequacy in court infrastructure such as court houses and residential facilities for judges and obsolete equipment and technology.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described as "unfortunate" Sunday's incident at Kintampo Falls, extending his condolences to the families of students of Wenchi Senior High School and others who perished.

Eighteen people have been confirmed dead by Chief Superintendent Desmond Owusu Boampong, Divisional Police Commander of Kintampo.

Extension officers receive laptops to enhance their work

Thirty-nine community extension agents who are assisting cocoa farmers in 331 communities in some parts of the country have received laptops to help them collect and analyse data in cocoa-growing centres.

The beneficiary communities are in the Suhum, West Akyem and New Juaben districts in the Eastern Region; Bia West, Juabeso and Wassa East in the Western Region; Awutu Senya in the Central Region; Ahafo Ano North, Sekyere East and Amansie West in the Ashanti Region; and Asunafo North in the Brong Ahafo Region.

N/R MMDAs tasked to prioritise maternal health care

Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in the Northern Region recorded 162 cases of maternal deaths in 2016.

The number, according to the Northern Regional Coordinating Director, Alhaji Alhassan Issahaku, was unacceptably high, for which reason he had tasked all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) in the region to prioritise maternal health care in order to prevent maternal deaths in their respective areas.

Mr Issahaku said this in his closing remarks at the launch of the 2016 Northern Regional League Table (DLT) in Tamale.

‘Provide skills training for disadvantaged in society’

The Administrative Manager of African Mining Services (AMS), Ms Adelaide Boye, has called on the government and corporate bodies to support projects geared towards providing skills for disadvantaged girls in the country.

She has also urged companies to invest in the training of girls in vocational or technical skills so that those companies could employ the girls to reap the benefit of the sponsorship while providing employment opportunities for the girls.

UCC, visiting students clash,10 injured

A clash between students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and some students of the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) last Friday night left 10 people injured.

One of the students who sustained a spinal cord injury has been referred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

A doctor at the Central Regional Teaching Hospital, Dr David Walawah, said the student was stabbed twice in the spine.

The 2017 Teshie- Nunuga Area Apostolisation ended on Saturday, February 18 with a call on Christian leaders to improve their human relations for effective ministry.

A lecturer at the Pentecost Theological Seminary, Apostle Samuel Ofori, said at the conference that ministry was about taking care of needs, adding that research showed that the human face of ministry covered about 60 per cent of the work.

Obogu raises funds to establish SHS

The chiefs and people of Obogu in the Asante-Akyem South District in the Ashanti Region last Saturday held a durbar to raise funds for the establishment of a senior high school in the town.

The durbar was part of initiatives being undertaken by the Omanhene of the Obogu Traditional Area, Nana Oduro Apenteng Darkwa III, who was installed eight months ago, to bring development to the town.

Dr Yumkella delivers 2017 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures

Once again, the University of Ghana will see another distinguished son of Africa mount the distinguished platform of the famous Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lecture Series. 

Dr Kandeh Yumkella, an agricultural economist, politician, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, will deliver the 2017 lectures at the Great Hall of the university from March 21-22, 2017.

Lebanon Lions Club launches hearing aid project

The Beirut Freedoms Lions Club of Lebanon, in collaboration with some Lebanese companies in the country, has initiated a project to provide hearing aid devices for the hearing-impaired in Ghana.

The first batch of 60 hearing aid devices has been fixed for people with hearing impairment at a cost of $222,000 (about GH¢999,000), as each of the devices cost $3,700 (GH¢16,000).

Child, Family Welfare Policy implementation underway in A/R

The Ashanti regional office of the Department of Children is intensifying moves towards the implementation of the Child and Family Welfare Policy in the region.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (through UNICEF) formulated the policy in February 2015 and it has been implemented on a pilot basis by the Ashanti regional office of the department since April 2016.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Catherine Afeku, has expressed her condolences to families of people who lost their lives in Sunday’s Kintampo Waterfalls disaster.

18 students have been confirmed dead at the Kintampo Waterfalls in the Brong Ahafo region after trees crashed on them following a heavy storm on Sunday.

Eyewitnesses say the heavy trees fell from the top of the waterfalls and landed on the people, mostly students who had gone to swim.

At least 17 people are feared dead after a tree fell on revelers at the Kintampo Waterfalls in the Brong Ahafo Region on Sunday afternoon.

Several others were injured in the accident, said to have occurred between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm.

Juapong: One killed, 2 injured over land dispute

A violent clash between the people of Awlime and Kluma, near Juapong on Saturday, over a piece of land has resulted in the death of the stool father of Awlime, Ebenezer Atsu.

Two other persons Asafoatse Jonas Atsu and Tse Mensah sustained injuries. Mensah has been treated and discharged, while the Asafoatse has been admitted at the Volta River Authority Hospital at Akosombo.
