Deputy AG sues banker over 'defamatory' Facebook post

The Deputy Attorney-General and Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, Dr Dominic Ayine, has filed a defamation suit at an Accra High Court against an Investment banker and Economist, Mr Evron Hughes, for comments he made regarding the $510 million Ameri Power deal, which the MP deems libellous. 

In Mr Ayine’s statement of claim, sighted by Graphic Online, he accused Mr Hughes of defaming him in a post he authored and published on Facebook on December 21, 2015, titled “RE: AMERI TRANSACTION”.

Iodised bottled water factory opens

The first iodised bottled water has been introduced onto the Ghanaian market by Well-being Natural Products Ghana Limited.

Sky Water, as it is called, contains bio natural active iodine which fights a number of diseases that are associated with lack of iodine in the human system.

B/A Regional hospital records fewer maternal deaths

The Brong Ahafo Regional hospital in Sunyani has recorded a 49 per cent reduction in maternal deaths between 2012 and 2015.

There were 35,18, 14 and 17 recorded cases in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Malaria, ear, eye, respiratory and acute urinary tract infections and gynaecological conditions were among the top 10 cases reported at the Out-Patients  Department (OPD) of the hospital in Sunyani.

Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr Richard Kuuia Baawobr as the Bishop of the Wa Diocese of the Catholic Church.

Until his appointment, Rev. Fr Baawobr was the Superior General of the Society of the Missionaries of Africa.

His appointment was announced  by Archbishop Jean Speich, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, in a statement issued in Accra.

Police intensify operations at KNUST

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Police Command has intensified day and night patrol with intermittent body searches on campus.

This follows an incident in which two students of the University Hall (Katanga) and the Unity Hall were stabbed in a clash between some students of the two halls.

A source at the KNUST told the Daily Graphic that one of the two students had been discharged, while the other was still receiving attention at the hospital.

EU to extend €31 million grant to Ghana to fund labour environment assessment

The European Union (EU) Delegation in Ghana is to extend a 31-million euro grant to Ghana to fund labour environment assessment, as well as technical and vocational training for the youth.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Haruna Idrissu, told Parliament Wednesday that the Minister of Finance, Mr Seth Terkper, and the Head of the EU Delegation would sign the agreement next week.

Establish land banks to deal with menace of Fulani herdsmen

A security analyst, Mr Emmanuel Sowatey, has proposed the establishment of land banks as one of the long-term measures in dealing with the conflict between Fulani herdsmen and indigenous farmers.

His proposal for land banks, according to him, was first made in the year 2005 or 2006 by an Early Warning Committee set up under the Ministry of the Interior.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, he said land banks dedicated as ranches for Fulani herdsmen, with communities also benefiting from the transaction, was important.

With his call to revisit the idea, Mr Sowatey said Fulani herdsmen, the youth and opinion leaders needed to be part of the processes leading to the acquisition of the lands dedicated to grazing.

Illegal loggers invade Kalakpa Resource Reserve

The Kalakpa Resource Reserve in the Volta Region risks losing most of its trees to illegal logging if steps are not taken immediately to reverse the situation.

 The Daily Graphic has gathered that for the past three months there has been massive felling of trees in the reserve at areas such as Fosime, Adaklu Torkpetoe and Dokpo.

More than 20 containers of logs are said to have been moved out of the reserve over the past three months.

Two unions fight to represent 4,000 workers

Two unions in Tema are contesting each other’s right to represent more than 4,000 workers in the sector. The Maritime and Dock Workers Union (MDU), which currently holds the collective bargaining certificate (CBA) for workers in the sector, is being challenged by the National Union of Harbour Employees (NUHEM) for the mandate to represent the workers.

The challenge started in 2011 when NUHEM presented a list of workers belonging to its union to the Labour Department. However, the MDU challenged the list as containing ‘ghost’ and fictitious identities and referred the matter to the court for redress.

SADA urged to consider value addition to grass to reduce poverty

A Commissioner of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Professor David Millar, has urged the leadership of the Savannah Accelerated  Development Authority (SADA) to consider value addition to grass in the ecological zone to help reduce the growing incidence of poverty and bushfires in the area.

According to him, “grass could be used for the manufacturing of charcoal through the process of briquetting thereby reducing bush fires, degradation of the forest and also creating jobs for the people.”

Exim Bank Bill generates lively debate in Parliament

The second reading of the Ghana Export Import Bank (EXIM)  Bill, 2015 generated a lively debate in Parliament Wednesday, with most members kicking against plans to make the proposed bank independent of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The MPs for Tamale South, Manhyia South, Tema East and Wenchi, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, Mr Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover and Prof George Gyan-Baffuor, respectively, among many others, argued that according to the country's laws, all banks were subject to the regulations of the BoG.

NHIA to pay arrears in 1 month

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has agreed to pay all arrears owed the Health Insurance Service Providers Association of Ghana (HISPAG) within the next month.

This follows an agreement reached between the authority and the HISPAG after a meeting last Friday.

In view of that, members of HISPAG have agreed to reconsider their threats of reverting to the cash and carry system.

NGO dupes rural communities under pretext of providing support for vulnerable

Scores of people in some rural communities have been allegedly fleeced of more than GH¢20,000 by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) under the pretext of offering them support and scholarships.

Some of the victims are from the Ashanti, Eastern, Central, Greater Accra and Western regions.

Two of the top officials of the NGO, the United Kingdom Scholarship, have been arrested by the police in Kasoa.

AMA to reintroduce embossment of numbers on taxis

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will from March 1, 2016 reintroduce the embossment of numbers on taxicabs operating in the metropolis.

The move, according to the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo III, is to provide maximum security to passengers and drivers, and to also assist passengers to retrieve items left in taxis.

Four arrested for killing cattle at Agogo

Four persons have appeared before the Agogo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly killing cattle belonging to some nomadic herdsmen in the area.

The four were arrested by the Agogo Police around 10 a.m. on February 15, 2016.

Narh-Bital Hospital donates to nurses’ school

Narh-Bita Hospital in Tema has donated some items, teaching aids, hospital equipment and an unspecified amount of money to the Community Health Nurses’ Training School at Odumase-Krobo in the Eastern Region.

The donation prompted the Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sackitey II, to urge citizens of the area and philanthropists to come to the aid of the school.
