Government settles GH¢588m legacy debts

The government has settled GH¢588 million of the GH¢2.4 billion indebtedness of the Volta River Authority (VRA) to local banks and its suppliers.This was after an initial deposit of GH¢250 million and two quarterly payments of GH¢169 million in the last quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), has put together a scheme to clear a number of drains in Accra of silt ahead of this year’s rainy season.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Saturday cleared any ambiguity over the government’s policy to roll out its free senior high school (SHS) policy, effective September this year, saying SHS education would be truly free.

Five Chinese and five Ghanaians nabbed for galamsey near Ankobra river

Five Chinese and five Ghanaian illegal miners have been busted in an operation by the Western Regional Police Command around the Ankobra river in the Western Region during their mining for gold.

The ten illegal miners were spotted digging in the river Ankobra in two communities, Bamiankor and Duwale both in the western region.

GJA presidential candidates to face-off in March 28 debate

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in partnership with the Elections Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) would on Tuesday, March 28, host candidates contesting the various positions in the Association at a public forum in Accra.

A statement issued by the MFWA and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the forum would feature a debate among candidates contesting the presidential slot.

Ghanaian writer Yaa Gyasi bags $1 million for debut novel

Ghanaian-American novelist Yaa Gyasi is poised to make a huge splash in the literary world with her debut historical fiction novel Homegoing which has already earned her a $1-million advance from the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.

The novel was inspired by a trip to Ghana in 2009, her first since leaving the country as an infant.

Speakers at the training sessions will include two specialists from the United States of America. They are Yuri Horowitz, a lecturer at Georgetown University and co-founder and partner at Navigo International and Andrew Dumaine from United States.

Tourism training programme to help boost sector

A three-city tourism training programme to help enhance the capabilities of various players in the nation’s tourism sector will be held from April 23 to April 29 in Kumasi, Ada and Cape Coast.

Afigya South Association constructs health centre at Boamang

Members of the Afigya South Association who live abroad have started the construction of a modern outpatient department (OPD) for the Boamang Health Centre in the Afigya Kwabre District in the Ashanti Region.

The building, which is part of their contribution to better the life of people in the area, has two consulting rooms, a waiting area, a pharmacy, a store unit, an accounts office, a laboratory, detention, injection and dressing rooms.

Police arrest leader of Delta Force for Friday's mayhem in Kumasi

A leader of the Delta Force group of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which stormed the offices of the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator in Kumasi, smashed windows and doors and threw him out of his office has been arrested.

Kwame Bamba who is 37years and a mechanic was arrested by the police on Saturday and has been detained to assist with investigations whilst there is an ongoing search for his accomplices.

During the attack on Friday a member of the Delta Force sustained a deep cut and bled profusely but was hurriedly carried away by other members of the group to an unknown location.

Two grabbed for online fraud

Two men are in the grip of the police for allegedly advertising vehicles on an online trading platform to defraud people. The two suspects who use the names Yaw Owusu or Emmanuel Osei, 28, and Isaac Akye or Hope Ahetoh,36, and a number of aliases, are said to have engaged in fraudulent sale of cars using tonaton.com, an online trading platform.

Merona Foundation supports orphanages

Merona Foundation, a non-profit organisation (NGO) based in the United Kingdom (UK), has donated educational materials to the Royal Feed Home, an orphanage at Ofaakor, near Kasoa in the Central Region.

The items include books for beginners, learning materials, assorted pens and pencils, writing aids, clothes, shoes, bicycles and playing kits.
