Strenghten SRH education to better meet adolescents’ needs

A study has established that Ghana’s Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Education programme is relatively advanced compared to other countries in the region.

It noted, however, that despite the strong support for the provision of SRH in schools,  the programmes are not providing the full range of information that adolescents need.

Cape Coast: Police retrieve 24 scissors from robbers

The Central Regional Police Command has retrieved 24 scissors from five suspected armed robbers who were arrested on Wednesday in Cape Coast as part of a "war" on criminal activities in the region.

The five, including Mohammed Mustapha, 53, Emmanuel Amoah, 21, Ekow Bentil, 18, Agbovie Mensah, 22, and Ekow Ewusie, 21, were arrested during a special operation conducted by the police at Nstin, a suburb of Cape Coast.

AG asks for more time to study docket of Delta Force 13

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs Mary Nsenkyire, yesterday adjourned to June 15, 2017 the case involving 13 members of the Delta Force, a vigilante group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This was after the prosecutor, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Asomadu Okyere-Darko, prayed for adjournment as the prosecution awaits advice from the Attorney-General’s (A-G’s) office.

FDA arrests herbalist who claims to have HIV cure

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has caused the arrest of the Chief Executive Officer of Amponsah Herbal Clinic, Mr Alex Kwadwo Amponsah, for advertising drugs he claims to be a cure for various sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV without authorisation.

Mr Amponsah, a herbalist, who also owns 'Wo haw ne sen' Company Limited, on a recent television programme, suggested that if candidiasis was left untreated, it could progress and turn into gonorrhea and after a while, develop into syphilis and later HIV.

Ghana to share experiences in oil and gas with Senegal - President Akufo-Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has indicated the preparedness of Ghana to share its experiences in oil and gas with Senegal.

He said Ghana has gained enormous experience in the management of its oil and gas resources, since the discovery in 2007, and the President believed the country had a lot to share with  Senegal especially in the the prudent use of the proceeds from the resources.

Court to hear Aisha Huang and 4 others' bail application May 23

The Criminal Division of the Accra High Court will on Monday, May 23, 2017 hear a bail application filed by En Huang [Aisha] and the four other Chinese nationals said to be involved in illegal mining [galamsey].

Lawyers for Huang, who is said to be a kingpin in the galamsey business and the others, Gao Jin Cheng, 45; Lu Qi Jun, 39; Haibin Gao, 26; Zhang Zhipen, 23 were supposed to move the bail application today but the Attorney General requested for more time to respond to it.

Minister of Energy, PUWU in tango

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has refuted alleged claims by the Minister of Energy, Mr Boakye Agyarko, that the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG’s) debt stock is worsening by the day due to faulty metering system and avoidable employee recklessness.

The union said on the contrary, currently, ECG’s average weekly collection was GH¢103.9 million, as against a target of GH¢130 million weekly.

Transport technology hub, Uber, has announced plans to rope in a million female driver-partners globally, including Ghana, to empower the women economically.

The initiative, which is expected to be achieved by 2020, is in line with the company’s global commitment to create a gender balance and empower women to benefit from the service.

Husband sets house ablaze, poisons himself

What started as a normal quarrel between a couple at Kwesikrom in the Ahanta West District turned bad with the husband allegedly burning the belongings of the family.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Adieu, Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency said the suspect Samuel Amoah allegedly took poison to end his life after the act.

Dr Anaba removed as Medical Director of Ridge Hospital

The Ministry of Health has removed Dr Thomas Anaba as the Medical Director of the newly refurbished Greater Accra Regional Hospital [Ridge Hospital] and consequently asked him to go back to the University of Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, his original place of work before taking up the new post at Ridge.

But Dr Anaba thinks that his removal is not appropriate and has taken issues with it.

Halt inefficiencies at the ports - Veep directs GPHA

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has directed the country’s port authorities to act decisively in halting the inefficiencies at the ports. Such inefficiencies and other bottlenecks, he said, had resulted in significant losses in revenue to the state, businesses and individuals.

“The inefficiencies encourage collusion among some importers, clearing agents, and Customs officers to exploit the system to the detriment of tax revenue,” he said.

Ghana on path to progress - President tells Ghanaian community in Dakar

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that Ghana has hit the path of returning to progress and prosperity. The progress, he indicated, had begun with the revival of the economy, adding that sooner rather than later, Ghanaians would be witnesses to the immense benefits of the realisation of the pledges he made to them.

Addressing the Ghanaian community in Dakar last Tuesday as part of his three-day official visit to Senegal, President Akufo-Addo gave an assurance that all the critical commitments he made to the Ghanaian people would be upheld.

New Ridge Hospital opens to public

The refurbished Ridge Hospital, now the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, was yesterday opened to the public. The 420-bed expansion project was financed by the government of Ghana with a credit facility from Exim Bank and HSBC Bank of the United States of America (USA).

Some of the facilities of the hospital are a diagnostic and treatment block with a 24-hour surgery unit, an imaging department, a maternity centre, a national intensive care unit (NICU), an intensive care unit (ICU), an emergency ICU and a burns unit.

Ernest Chemists supports victims of Takoradi gas explosion

Ernest Chemists Limited has responded positively to the appeal made to corporate Ghana to support the 'Sekondi -Takoradi fire' victims. The company, has accordingly donated assorted drugs and non-drug items to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority Hospital (GPHA) in Takoradi in a bid to lessen the financial burden brought upon the victims and the hospital.

Release of Delta 8: Minority says it’s threat to justice, Govt calls for investigation

The Minority in Parliament has condemned the decision by the Attorney-General’s  (A-G’s) Office to discontinue the trial of the infamous Delta Force members, and described the decision as a travesty of justice and lack of respect for the Judiciary.
