The status of gender equality in Ghana

2017 is the 60th anniversary of our independence as a nation. It is a good time to reflect on gender activism and gender equality in Ghana.

At the beginning of the sixth decade of our existence as a nation, we need to focus on the most important single intervention that will ensure 50:50 representation of women by 2030, and guarantee equitable representation of women at all levels of government. That intervention is the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill in Ghana.

June 3 disaster victims remembered

A memorial service was held at the Calvary Baptist Church at Adabraka in Accra last Saturday for victims of the June 3, 2015 disaster that occurred at the Goil Filling Station, near the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

The two-hour service was attended by tens of Ghanaians, including families of the deceased and survivors of the disaster.

Government’s blueprint for fight against galamsey ready

The government’s blueprint for a sustained fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and environmental protection is ready but needs President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s endorsement before it can be rolled out.

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, made this known when members of the Steering Committee of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey paid a courtesy call on him.

President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbè is the new chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

SIC Insurance supports 100 medical

SIC Insurance, Ghana’s largest insurer has presented a travel insurance sponsorship package to one hundred Medical Students for this years’ exchange programme abroad organised by the International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA).  

A total premium of $5,000 was paid by the SIC Insurance to support the medical students with a sum insured of €30,000 per student.

A fire outbreak at the Prampram warehouse of Kingdom Books and Stationary Limited on Sunday morning, has destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

According to a security guard at the facility, the fire started at about 6:30am, from what he suspected was an electrical fault.

Galamsey fight: River Pra showing signs of improvement

The fight launched by the Media Coalition Against Galamsey is yielding some positive results, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Twifo Atti-Morkwa, has disclosed.

Mr Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi, who made this known when he led journalists to the River Pra on Saturday said: “we are grateful to the government and Coalition of the Media, our river is showing some changes.”

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has called for stricter sanctions for Freight Forward Operators, Customs Officers as well as individuals and institutions who fail to adhere to due processes in the export of food and other items to foreign markets.

The Minister says the time has come for government to impose severe penalties on those whose negligent of duty is causing the country millions of dollars following the ban on exports of vegetables and other food items to the European Union Markets.

Captain Mahama to be buried Friday June 9

The family of the slain soldier, Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama, has announced that he would be buried on Friday, June 9.

Spokespersons for the family, Zakaria Sakara and WOII Ibrahim Samed, said the family would be meeting today and put final touches to plans as to how the funeral would be held.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested nine more suspects in connection with the killing of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama.

The suspects are made up of six men including a 12 year old and three women.

BECE begins Monday; 468,053 candidates to write exams

A total of 468,053 candidates will write this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) which commences on Monday, June 5 to June 9, 2017.

Out of the total number of candidates, 241,148 are males, while 226,905 are females.

The General Legal Council has explained why it suspended lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu for six years in total, when he was found guilty of professional misconduct.

According to the council, Mr Sosu was convicted on two different charges, and suspended for three years on each charge.

The suspensions are however to run concurrently, from June 2, 2017 to June 1, 2010.

Mr Sosu pleaded guilty to all of the charges according to the General Legal Council (GLC).

General Legal Council suspends Lawyer Xavier Sosu

A human rights lawyer, Mr Francis Xavier Sosu, has been suspended from practising as a lawyer for three years by the General Legal Council (GLC).

The suspension took effect from June 2, 2017 and will end on June 1, 2020.

Businessman forges bank statement for visa

The Managing Director of the Univec Complex Ventures, Seth Kwame Esahe, has been ordered by an Accra Magistrate   Court  to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for forging a bank statement.

 He was also fined GH¢1,250,000 or in default serve a 12-months sentence with hard labour.

Police grab woman thought to have set Captain Mahama's body ablaze

A female suspect, said to be the woman, who was seen taking close up photos of the late Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama’s body, in the video evidence widely shared on social media has been arrested by the police in Kumasi.

On social media, majority have concluded that the said woman, was the one who set Captain Mahama's body ablaze, but others have argued that, from a careful look at the video, she was using a phone to get close up photos.

We’ll fish out killers of Capt. Mahama; they can’t hide - IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has given assurance that all those involved in the killing of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama will be fished out and dealt with according to the law.

He warned that the perpetrators of the heinous crime could run but they could not hide as the police would do everything within their law enforcement powers to get to the bottom of the crime.
