Yara opens fertiliser depot in Afram Plains

Yara Ghana Limited, in collaboration with one of its distributors, Ransboat Company, has opened a fertiliser depot at Maame Krobo in the Afram Plains South District in the Eastern Region.

The depot is expected to improve access to fertilisers at Donkorkrom, Tease and surrounding communities.

Emulzer paint experts visit Ghana

Two technical experts from the world renowned Emulzer paid a one-week working visit to the country as guests of City Paints Supply Ltd. Emulzer is one of the biggest waterproofing companies in Turkey and a leader in liquid waterproofing solutions. During their visit, the representatives organised two different workshops with architects, applicators and various clients to educate them on the advantages of using the Emulzer range of products, product specifications and correct application techniques.

Speaking on behalf of Emulzer, Mr Kagkan Goymat explained the importance of using Emulzer waterproofing materials in the early stages of construction.  Whether basements, tunnels, motorways, bathrooms or swimming pools, he urged people to apply Emulzer waterproofing materials in initial stages of construction to avoid incurring high costs later.

Sacking media from court ‘indiscreet, affront to freedom’ - Affail Monney

Mr Roland Affail Monney, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the Magistrate at the Accra Central District Court, Her Worship Arit Nsemoh for sacking journalists from her court.

According to Mr Monney, “the GJA considers this action- indiscreet, reprehensible and an affront to media freedom.”

The state security agencies are reported to have uncovered the diversion of huge sums of money by a gang of workers at the Tema port into their personal accounts.

It is said to be part of revelations of an ongoing investigations into financial malfeasance at the Tema sea port of entry.

Abesim: Wedding errand vehicle involved in accident; taxi driver killed

A fatal accident that occurred on the Sunyani-Abesim Highway on Saturday, claimed the life of a taxi driver, Osman Sumala, while six others were injured.

The vehicles involved in the accident, were an Opel Astra taxi cab with registration number GR 5921- U, which was loaded with tomatoes and a Toyota Camry with registration number BA 393-16.

Judges trained on need to decriminalize attempted suicide

Mental Health Advocacy GH, has initiated moves aimed at ensuring that, attempted suicide was decriminalized, with a training workshop for judges.

According to Mental Health Advocacy GH, many attempted suicide cases were mental health related, and therefore people should not be punished for that.

Court remands 14 for allegedly vandalising Somanya Police station

The Koforidua Circuit Court has remanded 14 people for allegedly vandalising the Somanya Police Station on May 29, 2017.

Refusing them bail, the court, presided over by Mrs Mercy Addei Kotei, remanded them to reappear on June 27, 2017.

Twenty participants who shared stories about their fathers in a promo by The Mirror were honoured at a ceremony in Accra yesterday.

Out of the number, three received award packages for their fathers.

Security, safety concerns at Kumasi Prison following collapsed wall

The collapse of part of the wall of the Kumasi Central Prison has raised security and safety concerns at the prison facility.

Although the wall separating both remand and convicted prisoners is intact, the prison officers fear that the entire structure may collapse since it forms part of the fallen wall that was constructed at the same time.

Police arrest two suspected Chinese “galamseyers”

The Anyinam District Police has arrested two Chinese nationals suspected to be engaged in illegal mining.

The suspects, Li Fan Fan, 25, and Liu Liang, 29, were arrested last Thursday at a galamsey site at Kodobeda, a suburb of Anyinam in the Atiwa District in the Eastern Region. A third suspect is, however, on the run.

Two Nigerian robbers in police grip

An attempt by two Nigerians to rob a couple of GH¢600 they had cashed from a bank was foiled by a motor rider near the Flagstaff House in Accra.

The Nigerians, Ndubueze Odoemenam, 22, and Chiokoko Amade, 25, are said to have perforated the tyres of the couple’s vehicle, while they were in the banking hall.

After the couple had cashed their money from the bank last Wednesday, the suspects, riding an unregistered motorbike, trailed them from the bank, knowing very well that because they had perforated the tyres, it would not be long before the vehicle came to a stop.

Hospital managers decry delays in reimbursing claims

Some hospital managers operating in deprived communities in the country have expressed fears that their facilities are grinding to a halt as a result of the indebtedness of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to their facilities.

The situation is as a result of the fact that majority of their patients are NHIS card bearers who rely heavily on it to access health care.

The Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will pay an official visit to China from June 20 to 25 at the invitation of the Chinese Vice President, Li Yuanchao, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has announced.

According to Mr Lu Kang, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the Chairman of the CPPCC, Yu Zhengsheng and Vice President Li Yuanchao will meet and hold talks with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia respectively.

NGO unlawfully detains 30 children in the Afram Plains

Thirty children have been unlawfully detained by International Justice Mission (IJM) a non-governmental organisation (NGO), in the Afram Plains North Constituency of the Eastern Region for allegedly engaging in child labour activities.

Residents of the Afram Plains North Constituency have, therefore, petitioned the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to help release their children who have been in the custody of the IJM after the raid.

Civilians to submit guns for marking to reduce illicit arms trade and violence

Civilians who possess guns will now be expected to submit them for marking as part of reforms to reduce illicit arms trade and gun violence in Ghana, the Ministry of the Interior has announced.

This follows the marking of all military guns by the National Small Arms Commission (NSAC) as part of an ECOWAS Protocol.

Centipedes invade 102 communities in Western Region

An army of centipedes has invaded more than 102 communities in the northern parts of the Western Region, causing havoc to crops and creating discomfort in the affected areas.

Following the invasion, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Western Region office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have dispatched a team to study and control the situation.

University of Education, Winneba reopens

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has reopened, three days after it was shut down by its management following a legal action challenging the legitimacy of its Governing Council (GC).

But the lecturers of the university have declared an indefinite strike until the final determination of the case.

The reopening of the university, which has since been confirmed on the UEW website, came about after the Winneba High Court Friday rebuked the university’s authorities for the closure after a ruling by the court last Tuesday.

I’ll protect integrity of Judiciary - Justice Sophia Akuffo

The Chief Justice nominee, Justice Sophia Akuffo, has promised to crack the whip to ensure the integrity of the Judiciary and the delivery of quality justice for all.

In that regard, she said she would take disciplinary action against judges and staff of the Judicial Service who would engage in corruption in the administration of justice.

Build mental hospitals in northern sector

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, has urged the government to improve on mental health facilities in the three regions of the north.

He said all the three mental health hospitals in the country were located in the south with none in the north.
