ECOWAS agric experts develop plans to deal with fruit flies

Agricultural experts from eight ECOWAS countries are meeting in Accra to develop an action plan to deal with flies that negatively impact on the production of fruits in the sub-region.

The workshop, which is a follow up of the 2016/2017 action plan, is in recognition of the negative impact of fruit flies on the production and export of fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly mangoes, to European and American markets.

Police Constable gunned down at Michel Camp

A police officer, Constable Micheal Kporyi, was killed while on patrol duty at Michel Camp on Monday night in Accra.

According to eye witnesses, the officer was gunned down by two assailants on a motorbike who pursued him to the UBA Filling station.

Tidal waves hit coastal communities—One feared dead, several properties destroyed

A number of fishing communities on Ghana’s coastline were last Saturday and Sunday hit by waves that destroyed homes and other properties.

Also affected were canoes, nets and fish processing equipment.

Among the worst hit are Shama in the Western Region, Cape Coast and Keta in the Central and Volta regions respectively.

Yaw Amankwa, key suspect who shot Major Mahama on the run - Police

The police have identified Yaw Amankwa, alias Bulla, as the key suspect said to have fired at Major Maxwell Adam Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi on Monday May 29, 2017 before other attackers descended and killed him with cement blocks and clubs.

Amankwa, who is on the run, is said to have used a double-barrelled gun he was wielding, while others rushed to buy petrol and set the body of the deceased ablaze.

NADMO dispatches relief items to tidal waves victims

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has begun a major relief effort to mitigate the suffering of people displaced by tidal waves in the Central, Greater Accra and Volta regions.

The Director-General of NADMO, Mr Eric Nana Agyemang Prempeh, told the Daily Graphic on phone at 1 p.m. on monday that, “As I speak with you, two big trucks fully loaded with relief items have left Accra for Sege in the Greater Accra Region and Kedzi, Ketu and Keta, all in the Volta Region.”

The police have revealed that apart from the fractures on the head of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, there were bullet wounds on his body, giving a clear indication that the suspects fired shots at the deceased before setting his body ablaze.

During the postmortem, a number of bullets were removed from the body of Major Mahama, the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Bright Oduro has told Graphic Online’s, Mary Mensah.

Explosion kills two at Pioneer Food Cannery

An explosion at a fuel pump at the Pioneer Food Cannery (PFC), a tuna canning company, last Sunday killed two persons and left five others with various degrees of  burns.

The incident, which occurred about 5:15 p.m., followed what has been described as the company’s failure to put in place control measures when a fuel pump that connects the steam boiler facility at the company’s production plant developed a fault and was being replaced.

3 Die, 12 injured in gory accident at Asamankese

Three persons died on the spot when a Toyota Hiace bus on which they were travelling from Akyem Oda to Accra was involved in an accident on the outskirts of Asamankese yesterday.

Twelve other passengers sustained various degrees of injury, with one in critical condition.

NADMO adopts strategies to avert disasters ahead of peak rainy season

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has rolled out preventive strategies to forestall disasters ahead of the heavy rains expected this month.

Two youth groups of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) yesterday allegedly clashed over the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer for the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

Fast-track implementation of National Identification System - Prez Akufo-Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has directed the National Identification Authority (NIA) to immediately engage with Identity Management Systems (IMS) Limited, a private identity management company, “to agree on the modalities to ensure the efficient roll-out of the National Identification System (NIS) project not later than 15th September, 2017.”

Ghana rolls out plan to deal with child labour

 

Ghana has rolled out a second National Plan of Action (NPA 2) to boost its momentum to effectively deal with eliminating the practice of child labour, a danger that has compromised the health and safety of children of school age in the country.

The GH¢2.7-million action plan, which is expected to complement the shortfalls in the NPA 1, has a life span of four years (2017-2021) and there is currently resource mobilisation going on to ensure its effective implementation.

Adansi South District records high teenage pregnancies

The Adansi South District recorded a total of 640 cases of teenage pregnancy in 2016 as against 580 in 2015.

The District Public Nurse, Mrs Abigail Ababio, has, therefore, expressed worry at the increasing number of teenage pregnancies in the district.
