'My gov’t fulfilling campaign promises' - Akufo-Addo

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says his 7 month old government is already fulfilling the promises and commitments made to the Ghanaian people in the run-up to the December 2016 elections, despite the economic mess inherited by his administration.

According to President Akufo-Addo, “when we came into office, we were met with huge debts and no money. It is for this reason that we put in place the appropriate measures to strengthen our monetary system, so the development we promised the people can be met.”

'70 per cent contracts to go to locals' - Bawumia

Seventy per cent of government-funded projects are to be offered to local entities as part of initiatives to build a vibrant economy.

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who announced this in Accra yesterday, said that would help local companies to build their capacities and create an enabling environment for them to thrive and own the local economy, while helping to make it robust.

The Ghanaian economy as it is today cannot support new employment opportunities in the public sector as it is choked, the Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, has said.

Giving hints of a possible downsizing in the public sector under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Programme, he said the government might consider laying off some workers in the public sector.

All public tertiary institutions have been directed to stick to their 2016/2017 academic year’s fees while waiting for Parliament to reconvene to consider and approve their 2017/2018 academic fees.

The directive is to ensure that the reopening for the 2017/18 academic year is not unduly affected because of the delay in the approval of the fees and other charges.

Put up high-rise buildings to maximise land - Atta Akyea advises developers

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, has advised landowners to consider putting up high-rise or multi-storey residential buildings to ensure effective land use in the country.

He said such structures were not only convenient and cost-effective, but also created more room for occupation on limited pieces of land.

Police officer killed on Kintampo-Tamale highway laid to rest

The policeman, who was mistaken for a highway robber and killed by his colleague officers on the Kintampo-Tamale highway in May this year, has been laid to rest at Axim, his hometown, in the Nzema East District in the Western Region.

Corporal Robert Kumi Ackah was escorting an 'OA' passenger bus to the Northern Region when the incident occurred on that highway.

Tullow Ghana renews 3-year partnership contract with “Right to Dream” Academy.

Independent oil and gas company, Tullow Ghana Limited, has renewed a 3-year partnership agreement with education and football academy “Right to Dream”. The move is geared towards driving its Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Initiative.

President begins 5-day visit to Western, Central regions

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will begin a five-day tour of the Western and Central regions today.

Between today and Wednesday, he will be interacting with the chiefs and people of Bibiani, Sefwi  Wiaso, Wassa Akropong, Tarkwa, Half Assini, Atuabo and Axim before heading to Sekondi and Takoradi.

Speaker stirs controversy over Founder’s Day

The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has stated that Dr Kwame Nkrumah cannot be credited to be the sole founding father of Ghana, since the struggles for independence were started by other prominent Ghanaians.

He said the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) leaders fashioned the independence struggle and Dr Nkrumah came later through the invitation of UGCC leaders, "and added significantly to the struggle".

The British High Commission in Accra says it has not issued advice on a possible terror attack on Ghana to its citizens.

According to the High Commission, recent reports suggesting that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have issued a new warning with regard to terrorism in Ghana was false.

Fire has gutted part of the Savelugu branch of the adb Bank in the Savelugu-Nanton Municipality in the Northern Region.

Public tertiary institutions charging illegal fees - Ayariga

The Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of Parliament, Mr Mahama Ayariga, has threatened to go to court to compel public universities, polytechnics and nursing training colleges to legalise their school fees.

He said the current fees charged by the public tertiary institutions were illegal since they had not been approved by Parliament in compliance with the Fees and Charges Act.

Suspected Illegal miner shot dead at Obuasi Wawase

The anti-illegal mining task force commissioned last week on Sunday evening clashed with suspected illegal miners at Wawase in Obuasi, leaving one illegal miner dead.

The Public Relations Officer of Operation Vanguard, Major Gariba Pabi, said around 17:00 GMT personnel from the Ashanti Region on patrol met stone-pelting illegal miners at Wawase, a community in Obuasi notorious for galamsey.

The Coalition Against Mandatory Road Towing Levy (CAMROTOWL) has protested against attempts by the government to enforce the law by compelling vehicle owners to pay the mandatory towing levy.

It has, therefore, cautioned the government against any attempt to impose and enforce “this extortive levy which seeks to milk and jeopardise drivers. We shall fiercely resist this in all legal ways possible.”

Wynca farmers showcase success of technology

A field trip was organised to one of the Wynca Sunshine Maize High Yielding Solutions System demonstration farms at Obawale in the Yilo Krobo district in the Eastern Region last Friday to appreciate the enormous success that has been recorded in terms of crop yield.

The system uses technology that makes it possible for smallholder farmers to plant treated seeds and also benefit from efficient weed and pest control systems to improve their yield.

Atatürk Project organises health screening

The Kemal Atatürk Project has organised a two-day health screening exercise for head porters, popularly called ‘kayayei’, in Accra.

The programme was organised in partnership with the Sulemana Memorial Hospital based at Mamobi, a suburb of Accra,during which the disadvantaged girls were screened for various diseases.

‘Let’s partner to manage critical health cases’

The Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners (SPMDP), Ghana, has called for public-private partnership in the management of critical cases to avert unnecessary deaths.

It said the delays in treatment of critical cases in the various health institutions had often resulted in unnecessary deaths.
