Ghana Investment Summit underway in Accra

This year’s ‘Ghana Investment Summit’ opened in Accra on Monday with an assurance to investors that the government was initiating measures to protect their investments and ensure higher returns on them.

The Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, who gave the assurance, said the Ministry of Finance had taken steps to sanitise the banking system as part of efforts to bolster the confidence of both local and foreign investors in the sector.

Extend maternity leave — First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo

The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has called for the extension of maternity leave from the current three months to a minimum of three-and-a-half months.

That, according to her, would be consistent with provisions in the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO’s) Maternity Protection Convention, to which Ghana is a signatory.

Ablekuma Sub-Metro demolishes structures on watercourses

Dozens of structures on watercourses at Mataheko in the Ablekuma Sub-Metro of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) have been demolished.

Portions of the walls of a building belonging to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma Central, Mr Ebenezer Nartey, were also demolished.

Labour Commission asked to establish regional offices

The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, Mr Ofosu Asamoah, has called for the establishment of regional offices to help the commission deal with the petitions that are presented before it.

He said there was the need to decentralise the activities of the commission to ensure that the needs of a lot more people were met.

Fuel prices to rise in August — IES

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has predicted another marginal increase in fuel prices on the local market in the August second pricing window as a result of various economic developments across the world.

The institute explained that unless the government took deliberate steps to ensure fair and healthy competition among the oil marketing companies (OMCs), fuel prices were likely to go up in the country.

Public warns against fake Yara branded fertilizer

The public has been asked to be wary of some unscrupulous persons who have resorted to putting fake fertilisers into Yara branded sacks for sale at very cheap prices.

A statement from Yara Ghana Limited signed by Mr Danquah Addo-Yobo, the Managing Director, said some persons were using old and or disused Yara sacks, put in their own products, and sell to the unsuspecting public.

Nungua gets modern cemetery next year

Construction of a modern cemetery for the people of Nungua and its surrounding communities in the Greater Accra Region has started.

The project being executed by Sino Africa Development Company Limited, a real estate and civil engineering firm, is expected to be completed in December this year and opened to the public early next year.

Baabianiha, Komfuorkrom not part of Japekrom - Drobo Traditional Council

The Drobo Traditional Council in the Brong Ahafo Region has reacted to a Daily Graphic story published in the Tuesday, August 15, 2017 edition in which the Japekrom Traditional Council claimed that Baabianiha and Komfuorkrom were part of the Mpuasu-Japekrom stool lands.

The story was published under the headline: Japekrom and Drobo Traditional Councils disagree over mining rights - a report of a press conference held by the Japekrom Traditional Council and addressed by the Atipimhene of the area, Nana Dr Adjei Henne Aframfo I.

Malian delegation understudies NHIS

An eight-member technical delegation from Mali is in Ghana to understudy the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

It will use the five-day visit to learn from Ghana’s experience in running the scheme, to improve Mali’s health insurance system.

First Lady donates towards Osu Homowo festival

The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has presented food items and money to the Osu Traditional Council towards the celebration of this year’s Homowo.

The items included assorted drinks, cooking oil and maize, as well as GH¢5,000.

Project to empower rural women launched

A project to empower 6,400 rural women to be able to demand their rights and have greater influence in their households and communities has been launched.

The project also seeks to empower another 6,400 rural women to have more secure and sustainable access to markets and productive resources leading to increased income.

Public reacts to towing levy suspension

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has welcomed the government’s decision to discontinue the controversial mandatory tow levy.

According to the union, the suspension was an indication that the government had given a listening ear to the people.

‘Infections during pregnancy affect child health’

A gynaecologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra, Dr Kweku Asah-Poku, has stated that in order to prevent infections during pregnancy and childbirth, it was necessary for prospective mothers to undergo lessons in preconception healthcare.

According to him, most infections in newborns were acquired from mothers during pregnancy, childbirth or after birth.

MTN donates to La Traditional Council towards 2017 Homowo

Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) Ghana Monday presented a cheque of GHc5, 000, airtime worth GHc 500.00 and a hamper of assorted drinks to the Paramount Chief of La Traditional Area, Nii Kpobi Tettey Tsuru III at the La Traditional Council in Accra.

The gesture was to support the celebration of the 2017 Homowo festival.

Presenting the items, the Customer Relation Executive of MTN Ghana, Mrs JemIma Kotei-Walsh, said the donation was to celebrate the heritage of the Ga people as part of the company’s effort to reach out to their numerous customers in La.

FAO advocates efficient rice farming practices

African farmers require high-yielding rice varieties to increase productivity in commercial volumes to improve livelihoods and ensure sustained food security, the Assistant Director-General and Africa Regional Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Mr Bukar Tijani, has said.

“The demand for rice is growing at more than six per cent a year – faster than any other major food staple in sub-Saharan Africa – but the local production has been unable to keep pace with the demand, and the continent continues to rely on imports to meet its increasing demand for rice,” he stated.

Operation Vanguard extends frontiers

The joint taskforce against illegal mining, Operation Vanguard has extended its frontiers to cover major and minor water bodies such as Rivers Pra, Daboase and Ankobra in the Western Region, River Birim in the Eastern Region and River Enu in the Ashanti Region and others.

Since its launch on July 31, 2017, Operation Vanguard has made many arrests. A total of 139 suspected illegal miners have since been taken off illegal mining sites and handed over to the police for processing for court.

WAEC releases 2017 BECE results; withholds that of 1298 candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), 25 days earlier than last year.

It said the council has withheld the results of 1,298 candidates on suspicion of various offences, adding: “This excludes the subject results of candidates who were detected by the Item Differentia Profile (IDP) software to have cheated in the objective tests.

Tema Motorway roundabout opened to traffic

The Tema Motorway Roundabout has been opened to traffic, following the completion of construction works.

It was closed to traffic for months for the construction of four slipways linking Tema, Accra, Akosombo and Aflao.

Ankaful Psychiatric threatens to release inmates over lack of funds

The Ankaful Psychiatric hospital in the Central Region has threatened to release all inmates onto the streets due to lack funds for their upkeep.

According to authorities, the hospital was owing various suppliers of food and other items to the tune of over GHC3 million.
