GRA impounds over 100 vehicles without import duties

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has said there are many smuggled vehicles plying the streets in Ghana, stressing that the owners circumvented the process and evaded the payment of import duties on the vehicles.

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, the GRA revealed that it has recently impounded about 100 vehicles which were plying the streets and the owners did not pay import duties.

Conference on migration begins at University of Ghana

A two-day conference has begun at the conference hall of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana to discuss how countries, particularly in Africa could deal with migration and mobility issues.

The conference, organised jointly by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) and the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) would discuss among other things, migration and rural-urban development, migration policy and governance, and environmental and natural resources.

Upper East: Presidential 'media team' stranded

Some journalists in the Upper East Region who were travelling from Bolgatanga to Bawku Thursday morning to cover President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's tour of the region were left stranded as their vehicle broke down in the middle of the road.

Govt puts together 16.5 million digital addresses - Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that so far, a total of 16.5 million digital addresses have been captured as part of moves by the government to create a national database of digital addresses for all geographical locations in the country.

“It is unbelievable. We have been able to put together 16.5 million digital addresses. Every 5 by 5 metre square in Ghana has a unique address. When you look at the post-code, you will be able to immediately tell the region, district and the address,” the Vice President said with glee.

CJ unveils plans to close down dilapidated court structures

The Chief Justice (CJ), Ms Justice Sophia Akuffo has unveiled plans to close down all dilapidated court structures to ensure the safety and security of judges and court users.

She said most court structures across the country were deathtraps and demeaning to the administration of justice.

According to the CJ, she recently visited the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Court where conditions were so deplorable.

JUSSAG to strike over unpaid rent allowance

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSSAG) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike on Thursday, October 19, 2017 if the government fails to pay the rent allowance due its members.

According to the association, the rent allowance which formed part of its members’ conditions of service approved by the Judicial Council had been outstanding since January this year.

173 factories set for 1-district,1-factory roll-out – Ahomka Lindsay

At least 173 factories are ready to be rolled out as part of the government’s flagship One-district One-factory initiative, Deputy Trade and Industry Minister, Robert Ahomka Lindsay has said.

According to him, all the 173 projects will be carried out by private businesses with support from the government.

In a radio interview on Accra-based Citi FM, Mr Ahomka Lindsay said about 600 applications have been received from various businesses in and outside Ghana as well as 457 business plans.

Accessing quality education at Wellembele in the Sissala East District in the Upper West Region is a daunting challenge for the 460 pupils of the Dagbasu Primary and Junior High School (JHS).

The experts in a communiqué on the state of mental health services delivery in the country issued after a stakeholders meeting in Accra also said 41 per cent of Ghanaians had one mental disorder or the other.

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications (Telecoms Chamber) has announced the appointment of Mr Kenneth Ashigbey as Chief Executive Officer. He assumes duty on November 1, 2017.

Mr Ashigbey will join the Chamber from the Graphic Communications Group Limited, where he has been the Managing Director. He was previously the CEO at Optimum Media Prime (OMP) and also worked as the Chief Technology Officer at the Multimedia Group Ltd.

Flagstaff House, Parliament to go solar

Beginning next year, the Flagstaff House, Parliament House and other important state institutions will be provided with electricity from solar sources, the Minister of Energy, Mr Boakye Agyarko, has said.

He told Parliament last Tuesday night that the move was to reduce the load on the national grid, reduce government's expenses on electricity and send the right signal that solar energy was the right way to go.

The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, has stated that the government will crack down on corruption and wasteful public spending in the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) as part of a concerted effort to ensure good governance.

In a speech read on his behalf  at the Northern Regional launch of the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) in Tamale last Tuesday, Mr Ofori-Atta said the crackdown on corruption was consistent with the government’s efforts to create a more business-friendly environment for investors and better opportunities for the people.

LEAP to cover persons living with Cerebral Palsy

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is to enrol persons living with Cerebral Palsy (CP) onto the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme.

Members of households of persons living with CP are also to be registered freely onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms Gifty Twum Ampofo, announced this at a forum organised by Pumpkin Foundation to commemorate the World Cerebral Palsy Day last Tuesday.

Jute factory rehabilitation works progressing steadily

Rehabilitation works on the Kumasi Jute Mills Ltd, is steadily progressing. So far, refurbishment works on the administration block and fencing of the factory have been completed.

The management of the factory has also taken an inventory of the Mills’ machinery and has placed an order for spare parts needed to repair machines that have broken down.

Project transforms lives of adolescents by addressing their reproductive health needs

In January 2014, the National Population Council (NPC) and partners began the implementation of a four-year (2014-2017) Ghana Adolescent Reproductive Health (GHARH) project aimed at contributing to improvement of reproductive health knowledge and behaviour of adolescents. 

The United Kingdom (UK) government-funded programme, which was implemented by the Palladium Group, sought to strengthen local capacity to manage, coordinate, implement and monitor a multi-functional adolescent reproductive health programme with the objective of  generating evidence to support the scale-up of cost-effective adolescent reproductive health (ARH) interventions.

Soldier killed in motorbike accident in Tamale

A military officer, stationed at the Air Force base in Tamale met his untimely death Wednesday morning following a gory motorbike accident in Tamale.

The motorbike on which the soldier was riding was said to have veered off the road and entered a gutter. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
