Safety protocol was not followed in discharge of LPG at Atomic Junction

Preliminary investigations into the October 7, 2017 Atomic Junction gas explosion have revealed that safety protocol in the discharge of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) was not followed.

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr Hassan Tampuli, the product was discharged after 6 p.m., which is against the rules.

Make hand-washing, health promotion priority — 1st Lady

The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has urged members of the public to place emphasis on hand-washing and other health promoting habits in order to stay healthy.

She said it was important to stay away from unhealthy activities that had the tendency to cause germs infestation.

MP courts support for gas explosion victims

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wagon, Mr Emmannual Agyarko has solicited for support for some students of the University of Ghana who were affected by the gas explosion at the Atomic junction on October 7 this year.

Sunda International Ghana Limited and Twyford Ceramics, two Chinese companies who responded to calls from the MP donated relief items and an unspecified amount of money to the affected students.

The Vice President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, has refuted claims by the former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, that he uses 16 car convoy on his travels.

Prof. Adei, speaking at the 20th-anniversary celebrations of Morrison and Associations (an international audit firm), said he personally observed Bawumia's convoy of about 16 Four Wheel Drives occupy both lanes on a trip to Cape Coast.

Akufo-Addo's nine directives for LPG safety in Ghana

President Akufo-Addo in the aftermath of a horrible gas explosion at Atomic Junction in Accra on October 7, 2017 and on the advice of cabinet has directed that henceforth the Cylinder Recirculation Model of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution be implemented.

According to a statement signed by the Minister of Information, Hon. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid this model means that LPG Bottling Plants will be sited away from congested commercial and population centers and will procure, brand, maintain and fill empty cylinders to be distributed to consumers and households through retail outlets.

Beachfront tourism enclave to be developed in Accra— Veep

A beachfront tourism enclave is to be developed along the coast of Accra to meet the needs of the business community and tourists, the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced.

When completed, he said, the enclave, to be established on a 97.5-hectare stretch of land, would host more than 70 world-class hotels, amusement and theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, conference halls, an amphitheatre, a cultural village and concourses.

Literary festival hosts prominent writers

Writers and literary activists from Ghana, Togo, South Africa, Canada and Nigeria will converge on the Goethe-Institut in Accra from Friday, October 20, for a three-day literary festival dubbed, ‘Pagya!’

There will be readings, performances, workshops and panel discussions at the festival aimed primarily at getting more people to patronise books and good writing.

Pharmaceutical company supports gas explosion victims

Supra Pharma Limited, a pharmaceutical company, has donated a variety of medical consumables to the 37 Military Hospital to support the treatment of the victims of the Atomic Junction gas explosion.

The items included 30 cartons of assorted infusion and ciprofloxacin injections.

Motorway repair works progress steadily

Maintenance works on the Accra-Tema Motorway is progressing steadily. The contractor working on the 19-kilometre express road, which is part of National Road One (N1) Highway, is expected to be completed by the end of next month, one month ahead of schedule.

The works include repairs of all potholes identified on the two sections of the road linking the capital city Accra to the harbour city Tema. The road is also part of the Trans-ECOWAS Highway.

NGO cautions against stigmatising of ‘cerebral palsy’ patients

The Chief Executive Officer of Givers Never Lack Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, Mr Edward Amankwah, has expressed worry at how cerebral palsy patients are ridiculed in the country.

“My teenage son is a victim of cerebral palsy, so I equally share in the pain of cerebral palsy patients and that of their families. My son has on numerous occasions been ridiculed by many who do not understand the nature and causes of cerebral palsy,” he lamented.

‘Use services of only certified electrical wiring professionals’

The Public Relations Officer of the Certified Electrical Wiring Professionals Association of Ghana (CEWPAG), Mr Yaw Amponsah Ababio, has cautioned facility owners seeking service connection to use only certified electrical wiring professionals.

“It pays to use a certified electrician to wire your facility. You are sure to be safe from electric shocks and fires if your house has been wired by a certified professional,” he said.

Administrator-General Office to deploy asset management software

Officials of the Office of the Administrator-General (OAG), Presidential Estate Unit, say the unit is making arrangements to acquire asset management software to enable it to capture all procurements undertaken by the government.

According to the Administrator General, Mr David Yaro, the move was to help reduce the numerous challenges encountered in providing adequate data during Presidential transition processes.

First Lady launches iron supplementation for four regions

The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, launched the National Girls Iron-Folic Acid Tablet Supplementation (GIFTS) programme yesterday to provide drug supplements to women, adolescent girls and children to help reduce the prevailing high incidence of anaemia in the country.

The first phase of the programme, which was launched in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, is to reach about 360,000 in-school adolescent girls and close to 600,000 out-of-school girls in four regions in the country.

Court cautions govt over ECG bidding process

The legal battle between 1,001 workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the government over the planned concession of ECG to a private entity began yesterday with the Labour Division of the Accra High Court cautioning the government over the bidding process.

That was after Mr Martin Kpebu, counsel for the ECG workers, informed the court that the bidding process for the concession was still ongoing despite an interlocutory injunction filed by the workers.
