Police arrest suspected child trafficker

The police have arrested a 35-year-old woman suspected to be behind a number of child trafficking cases in Accra.

The suspect, Rebecca Martey, was arrested yesterday at Adabraka, an Accra suburb, when she attempted to traffic two boys, aged 12, to Ativikope, a fishing community in the Volta Region.

How the National Digital Property Address System works

The much- anticipated National Digital Property Address System, which is expected to make it easier for locations to be found across the country and boost emergency service delivery, has been launched in Accra.

Vokacom, a Ghanaian information technology firm, designed the system and is partnering the Ghana Post Company Limited to roll it out, with the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) expected to host the data.

Teacher unions give govt one-week ultimatum to pay salary arrears

Teacher unions in the country have given the government a one-week ultimatum to pay their salary arrears, else they will be forced to “use other channels.”

The unions include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) – GH.

Hope for 36,000 BECE candidates not placed in SHSs

The 36,000 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates who failed to qualify for placements into senior high schools (SHSs) and technical institutes (TIs) have been given the opportunity to improve upon their grades.

The candidates were not placed because they scored either grade eight or nine in English and Mathematics, thereby preventing them from continuing to SHSs/TIs to enjoy the Free SHS Programme, which started last month.

EU supports food security in ECOWAS countries

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has begun the implementation of the Regional Food Security Reserve strategy with a 56-million euros funding from the European Union (EU).

So far, 11,180 tonnes of millet, maize, sorghum and rice have been stored in warehouses in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger and Nigeria for rapid deployment in times of crisis.

K.T. Hammond accuses Ameri Energy of short-changing Ghana

A former Deputy Minister of Energy and sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa, Mr K.T. Hammond, has accused the Africa and Middle East Resources Investment Group (Ameri Energy) of gross misrepresentation and unjustifiably 'pocketing' $150 million from the power deal with the government.

He said Ameri Energy misrepresented itself as the entity which was to raise a $510 million loan and execute the installation of 10 GE TM2,500+ aero derivative gas turbines, operate, maintain and transfer, which Parliament approved on March 20, 2015.

Youth in Assin South abandon classrooms for ‘sakawa’

Some youth in communities in the Assin South District have abandoned schooling to indulge in cybercrimes, popularly called ‘sakawa’.

The youth are said to find the cybercrimes more lucrative than schooling.

The acting presidents of the Assin Apimanim and Assin Atandansu traditional councils, Nana Ohemeng Awere V and Odeafor Kuatwi Berimah II, respectively, made the observation in separate meetings with the Central Regional Minister, Mr Kwamena Duncan, last Tuesday.

Afram Publications organises Reading Clinic today

About 200 children from nine basic schools in the Accra Metropolis will today converge on the Mmofra Children’s Park at Dzorwulu in Accra to participate in this year’s Afram Reading Clinic in the local languages and in French.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has asked Intercity STC to suspend its intended operation at the Asafo Lorry Terminal in Kumasi until further notice.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has launched the National Digital Property Addressing System, “ghanapostGPS”, describing it as a “move ever closer to realizing our vision of formalising the Ghanaian economy.”

Launching the event at the Accra International Conference Centre on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo noted that the informal nature of Ghana’s economy has been a major constraint to her development.

English historian Thomas Fuller must have seen it coming when he noted that those born to be hanged cannot be drowned. Why else would Ghana’s 2017 reigning National Best Teacher, Ms Faustina Coppson, who started at the age of 10 to teach her mates, would still be teaching at age 41, and conclude that teaching is the only career for her?

Not your typical child prodigy though, Ms Coppson says she discovered at the rather young age – 10 years – that teaching was a natural flair for her even before she herself could be taught enough, and so she decided to bear her cross in life that early.

GWCL launches electronic billing and payment system

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has launched its electronic billing and payment system to boost its operations.

The initiative is also to help address customer challenges and inconsistencies associated with the current manual system, as well as block leakages in revenue collection.

Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire cooperate to reap higher benefits from global cocoa industry

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, the two largest producers of cocoa in the world, cannot continue to benefit from only a pittance of the global value chain of the industry.

He said the two countries contributed more than half of the global supply of cocoa but the benefit derived was nothing to write home about, describing that as an injustice.

“This is manifest injustice. It cannot and should not continue,” the President said.

Ghana Gas yet to compensate for Atuabo lands

The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) is yet to pay compensation to landowners and farmers in its operational areas due to litigation over the rightful owners of the affected land.

This is in spite of the Lands Valuation Division of the Lands Commission completing the necessary valuation of the land, and the Ghana Gas setting aside funds to compensate the landowners.

Finance Ministry acquires software to check unrealistic budget estimates

A software designed to equip district and regional procurement officers and engineers to prepare realistic budget estimates for infrastructural projects has been introduced by the Ministry of Finance and the Public Procurement Authority (PPA).

The software is also intended to foster transparency and address variations in the costs of public projects such as roads, buildings, power, water and sewage systems.

Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire sign cooperation agreements

Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire have signed a strategic partnership agreement (SAP) and three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to give new momentum to Ivorian-Ghanaian cooperation and relations.

The agreement covers the areas of defence and security, cocoa and cashew, as well as other strategic crops, maritime cooperation, mining, energy and environment, transport and economic policies.

Police gun down suspected armed robber at Atebubu-Amantin

Two police escorts accompanying a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus, in the early hours of Monday, gunned down a suspected armed robber at Atebubu-Amantin in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The bus, with registration number AS 8161-Y, was travelling from Sunyani to Yeji when four suspected armed robbers opened fire on the bus, targetting the driver’s side during the journey.

Kumasi youth locks up Daily Guide office over Asantehene report

The offices of the Daily Guide newspaper in Kumasi was Tuesday night invaded by some youth said to be members of the Kumasi Youth Association (KuYA) who wants a retraction and an apology from the newspaper, in relation to a report that linked the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to an alleged money laundering case in London.

Fish production in Ghanaian waters declines

The Chief Director of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development says there has been a decline in fish production in Ghana from the average of 289,000 tonnes a year to 203,000 tonnes over the past five years.

Mr Michael Arthur-Dadzie said the causes of decline were being observed even though the number of fishing boats, nets and fishermen had increased.
