Many women reporting breast cancer cases late - Specialist

A medical doctor at the Lister Hospital, Dr Claudia Gyimah has expressed worry that fear is holding many breast cancer patients from seeking early medical attention.

According to her, many women have had their breast amputated as a result of reporting late at health facilities with breast cancer cases.

Minister, MP haggle over revocation of licences by NCA

The were exchanges between the Minister of Communication, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Mr Sam George in Parliament yesterday, over the revocation of the licences of 131 radio stations by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

While the minister defended the revocation of the licenses and the imposition of the fines, which according to her, were in line with the regulations of the NCA, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Mr Sam George argued that the fees of schedule imposed on the radio stations had no parliamentary approval.

The Asantehene’s Mawerehene, Baffour Osei Hyeaman Brantuo VI has hinted that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in keeping with past happenings, will not respond to reports of money laundering linked to him in the United Kingdom.

The Asantehene returned to Ghana on Thursday after a trip to Brazil. During his absence, a British newspaper (The Telegraph) reported that he gave £200,000 as well as $200,000 (in cash) with consecutive serial numbers to Mark Arthur, a banker to be deposited on his behalf at the Ghana International Bank Plc.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has launched an endowment fund to support brilliant financially challenged Ghanaians who want to pursue programmes in the university.

The Vice Chancellor’s Endowment Fund (VCEF) will also support academically promising but needy continuing undergraduate and post-graduate students through scholarships tenable for training in any of the university’s faculties.

Moves by 1,001 workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to halt the planned concession of ECG to a private entity generated heated arguments at the Labour Division of the Accra High Court on Thursday.

Lawyers for the workers were supposed to move an application praying the court to halt the concession arrangement until the determination of a suit by the workers challenging the process.

Govt hits road to raise $2.5 billion to defray energy sector debt

In its quest to settle the huge debt crippling the energy and the banking sectors of the country, the government on Thursday began a roadshow in London to raise $2.5 billion through the issue of the much-awaited energy sector bond to defray the debt.

Proceeds from the roadshow will be used to offset the $2.4 billion energy sector debt which nearly brought banks in the country to their knees.

African universities score poorly in global ranking

No African university is among the world's best 300 universities, according to the current global university ranking.

 The University of Cape Town, South Africa, which is the number one university in Africa, is ranked 303rd in the global ranking.

 The number one university in Ghana — the University of Ghana — is ranked 1,983rd in the global ranking.

One-district, one-warehouse launched

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Wednesday rolled out the government’s one-district, one-warehouse programme with a sod-cutting for work to begin on the first warehouse project in Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

Rainstorm renders 200 people homeless at Wenchi

About 200 people have been rendered homeless and property running into thousands of cedis destroyed following a rainstorm that hit the Wenchi Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region last Tuesday evening.

Two people, including a pregnant woman, sustained serious injuries and were sent to a local hospital but have been discharged.

Veep launches e-certificate to complete online business registration

The Registrar General’s Department has completed its business automation project which now allows for the registration of businesses to be done fully online

 This follows the introduction of another feature to the electronic (E) registration portal known as E- Certificate.

With the completion of the automation project, business registration, including payments and receiving of commencement and incorporation certificates, could be done completely online from any geographical location.

Poultry farmers demand compensation for culled birds

Some poultry farmers whose birds were culled as part of measures to contain the Avian Influenza (Bird flu) disease that hit the country in 2015, have called on the government to compensate them without any further delay.

The affected farmers who claimed they had not received any compensation from the government following the subsequent slaughter of their birds, as a preventive measure, said they were currently in dire financial difficulties.

‘Help AMA to keep Accra clean’

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah, has expressed worry over the increasing number of persons with mental illness on the streets.

He has, therefore, called on all stakeholders to support the city authority to clear mental patients off the streets, in line with moves to keep the city clean and healthy.
