GUNSA condemns slave trade in Libya—calls on international community to act

The Ghana United Nations Students and Youth Association (GUNSA) has condemned the alleged slave trade of some Africans in Libya.

According to the union, the practice is not only barbaric, heinous and unacceptable, it is also a gross violation of the human rights of the affected persons.

Rape suspect on oxygen support

The Lebanese man, Rabih Haddad, 39, who is said to have allegedly raped his 19-year-old Ghanaian house help at his home at the Airport Hills Residential area in Accra, is said to be on oxygen support at the Ridge hospital.

A bail application by Mr Raphael Poku-Edusei, the lawyer for Rabih Haddad, was on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, thrown out by the Accra Central District Magistrate Court presided over by Arit Nsemoh on the basis that it lacked jurisdiction to grant bail.

Veep thanks Allah for NPP’s electoral victory

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has urged Ghanaians to continue to support President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government to successfully deliver on the promises they made to Ghanaians.

He said while it was through the prayers of Ghanaians that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) came to power, more prayers were required to ensure that the affairs of governance were steered in the direction of progress and prosperity.

Recovery facility for Orthopaedic Centre at Adoagyiri inaugurated

A 10-bedroom recovery facility for male amputees receiving treatment at an Orthopaedic Training Centre (OTC) at Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region has been inaugurated.

The project, estimated at 60,000 Australian Dollars (GH¢180,792), will not only provide shelter to the amputees, but also create a conducive environment for their quick recovery.

‘Curfew’ imposed on Kumasi to allow for performance of ritual

Residents of Kumasi will be placed under ‘curfew’ today to allow for the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu, to send an abusua kuruwa family or clan pot) from Manhyia to the ancestral home at Breman, a distance of about eight kilometres.

By Asante custom and usage, no one, apart from members of the royal family, is allowed to view the abusua kuruwa.

Three companies owed GRIDCo GH¢722 million...In 2016

Three companies owed the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), GH¢721.946 million as of December 31, 2016. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) owed GH¢540.397million, the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) was in debt to the tune of GH¢117.889 million, while the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo) owed GH¢63.660 million.

The Board Chairman of GRIDCo, Mr Kabral Blay-Amihere, who made this known at the eighth annual general meeting of the company in Accra yesterday, said the indebtedness of the major customers, ECG and VALCO, were impacting extremely on the financial operations of the company.

Court quashes rustication of 22 UCC students

The Cape Coast High Court, presided over by Justice William Boampong, has quashed the decision by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to rusticate 22 students of the university.

He also ordered the university to pay GH¢10,000 to each of the 22 students as compensation.

Criminals lace food with drugs-Women, girls are targets for rape

With Christmas just around the corner, the police have issued an alert to the public, particularly women, to be mindful of drugs that are being used by rapists to trap their targets at parties, social gatherings and other places.

The drugs are believed to be used to lace the food, drinks or water of victims.

Tamale celebrates Damba

The Tamale Metropolis came to a standstill on Thursday evening as the people poured onto the streets in their numbers to celebrate this year’s Damba Festival with pomp.

The Dagbon tradition was also at its best as chiefs rode on horsebacks with their retinue, made up of drummers and traditional warriors, displaying their mastery in musketry.

Bereaved KUMACA families to receive support for funerals

Each bereaved family of the deceased students of Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) is to be given GHc5,000 to suport initial funeral expenses, the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced.

The government will also take care of the funeral and burial expenses of each of the four students who died recently.

Jasikan assembly plans to establish three factories

The Jasikan District is capitalising on the government’s one-district, one-factory policy to speed up development in the district.

The district is reputed to be among the oldest districts in the country, being one of the four districts that was started in the Volta Region.

Sombre atmosphere at KUMACA following students deaths

There is a sombre atmosphere at the Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) as students in the school have been quarantined to avoid the spread of the H1N1 viral strain that has claimed some lives in the school.

The usual campus ambience is absent in the school as both students and teachers, as well as parents of the students, have been gripped by fear, following the mysterious deaths of the students.

The Police in Gambaga, the capital of the East Mamprusi District in the Northern Region have intercepted a Nissan patrol vehicle with six pump action guns and 130 cartridges.

The vehicle with registration number GE 5433-16 was coming from the Tamale direction towards Namong village in the Bunkprugu-Yunyon District when the police intercepted it on Friday morning about 10.30am.

Sakawa boy severs boy’s testes for rituals

The reproductive organs of a 10-year-old boy, Waachribu Adam, have purportedly been slashed for rituals by one Rauf aka Bossu, a known ‘sakawa’ (cyber fraud) boy in the Gambaga District of the Northern Region.

Bossu, aged 20, whose father is the assemblyman for the area, reportedly asked Adam to assist him carry some pieces of wood from a nearby bush.

UCC loses court case against 22 rusticated students

A Cape Coast High Court has ruled against the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to rusticate 22 students of the university for their alleged roles in a disturbance that occurred in the school early this year.

The court also awarded a cost of GH¢ 220,000 against the university to be paid to the affected students.

KUMACA deaths: Dr Bawumia commiserates with families and students

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed condolence to the bereaved families and students of the Kumasi Academy where some lives have been lost due to the H1N1 pandemic strain.

A statement issued by the Office of the Vice-President on Friday said, “On behalf of the President, the Government and people of Ghana, I wish to express our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the families, teachers, students and friends of Kumasi Academy Senior High School who have been affected by the H1N1 virus.”

‘Retool GAF to enable personnel counter emerging threats’

The Defence Minister, Mr Dominic Nitiwul, has called for the retooling of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to enable the personnel to counter emerging threats, both globally and in the sub-region.

He said it was very important for the GAF to be provided with equipment, vehicles, vessels and aircraft to enable them to meet the demand for security, in the wake of the government’s accelerated drive to develop the country.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed its condolences to the parents and families of the deceased students of the Kumasi Academy.

A statement issued by the GES and signed by the Director of Public Relations, Rev Jonathan Bettey said, “The Service is shocked and saddened at the report from the school over some eleven students having lost their lives with over forty others hospitalised and made to seek medical attention.”
