Accra Police deploy 50 motorbike patrol teams to deal with criminals

To fight the expected surge in crime involving the use of motorcycles during the Yuletide, the Accra Regional Police Command has deployed 50 motorbike patrol teams to deal with criminals.

The 50 motorbike teams, who will augment the effort of policemen already in the system, are made up of well-trained policemen whose principal task is to stop and chase motorcycle riders who fit the current police profile of criminals riding on motorcycles.

State-owned media timid — Prof. Karikari

Even though the 1992 Constitution explicitly protects the state-owned media to be independent, free and critical in order to demand accountability from government, they are timid, the Board Chairman of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Professor Kwame Karikari, has observed.

“The state-owned media are behaving like chickens that have been kept under a coop for a long time, and even 25 years later, they are not waking up, in spite of all the constitutional guarantees for them,” he said.

Policeman, three others arrested for armed robbery

Four suspected armed robbers, including a policeman, have been busted after they attacked and robbed a supermarket at Nungua in Accra last Tuesday night.

While three of the alleged robbers were arrested at a police snap checkpoint in the Abattoir area, the policeman, identified as Corporal Raymond Amegashie of the Tema Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit, was arrested at the Tsopoli Barrier when he was on his way to the Volta Region at 7 a.m.

 At the time of his arrest, he was in a pair of police trousers and boots and a civilian shirt.

One killed in Bimbilla shooting; another injured

A 40-year-old woman has been shot dead with her 14-year-old daughter also sustaining gunshots wounds in Bimbilla, the capital of the Nanumba North District in the Northern Region.

The body of the deceased, identified by the police as Alhassan Rahinatu, was discovered at Alulani, a suburb of Bimbilla when a Police and Military patrol team rushed to the area following sporadic gunshots.

Ghana signs €100m renewable energy agreement with Germany

Ghana and Germany have signed a 100-million Euro bilateral investment and reform partnership agreement to promote private investment in renewable energy and vocational training in Ghana.

Ghana's Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and Germany’s Deputy Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Friedrich Kitschelt, signed the agreement for their respective countries.

2,300 Goldfields workers go to court over dismissals

About 2,300 workers of Goldfields Ghana Limited have sued the company over its plans to sack them due to the short lifespan of its Tarkwa mine.

Per the lawsuit initiated on their behalf by the Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) at the Labour Division of the Accra High Court, Goldfields had informed the workers that they would be served with termination letters by yesterday, December 12, 2017.

Bushfires claim life, cause destruction to farmlands in U/W Region

Bush fires have claimed a life and destroyed 356.5 acres of farmlands covering a variety of crops at different stages of maturity in the Upper West Region since October this year.

The remains of the deceased, a woman, were found on her rice farm in the Nadowli-Kaleo District after the fires swept through the vast farmlands.

2nd Deputy BoG Governor in showdown with govt

The fate of the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, is uncertain, as his legal advisor says the government is pushing for his exit from the central bank.

His legal team is yet to begin discussions over a negotiated package for him.

The Daily Graphic has gathered that Mrs Josephine Ankomah, who heads Ecobank in The Gambia, is highly tipped to succeed Dr Asiama when his terms of exit are concluded.

Footballer remanded for allegedly stabbing Vandal

The 23-year-old footballer who allegedly stabbed a former student of the University of Ghana to death, following an argument, has been remanded by the Madina District Court.

The court, presided over by Mr Richard D. Anku, remanded George Osei Mensah who has been provisionally charged with murder, in custody to reappear on January 9, 2018.

Police gun down suspected robber near Akatsi; Arrest one, others flee

A suspected armed robber has been gunned down by the police in the Akatsi South District after a gun battle with the police at Kotomensakope Junction, near Akatsi in the Volta Region.

According to the Akatsi Police Commander, Supt. Mr Bismark Agyapong, the deceased, who is yet to be identified, was part of a gang that was on operation in the area last Monday dawn, hiding in the bushes and attacking unsuspecting commuters.

Dormaa East assembly, police arrest 13 illegal miners

Despite efforts by the government to curb illegal mining (galamsey) in the country, the practice has intensified in some communities in the Dormaa East District of the Brong Ahafo Region.

Some of the communities are Asuotiano, Wamfie, Dormaa Akwamu and Kyeremasu.

US supports Ghana to curb corruption

Ghana is benefiting from a $115 million annual support from the United States (US) for selected African countries to build their capacities to fight corruption. 

The move is part of the US foreign assistance efforts to support governments to create stronger laws and more effective institutions to investigate, prosecute and secure convictions.

Process to discharge 6 alleged Major Mahama killers begins

Six out of the 22 people accused of killing Major Maxwell Mahama will spend more time behind bars after the Accra Central District Court refused to hear an application by state attorneys for their discharge.

They are Yaw Annor, Philip Badu, Kweku Adjei, Solomon Sackey, Anthony Amoah and the only female accused person, Vivian Asahene.

A Principal State Attorney, Mrs Evelyn Keelson, yesterday made an oral application, praying the court to discharge the six persons because there was not sufficient evidence to prosecute them.

CJ schools MP over the use of titles in Court

The Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo on Tuesday schooled a Member of Parliament over the use of titles such as “Honourable” on writs.

According to the Chief Justice, names were to appear first before any designation. “If we want to learn from the people who originated these titles then do not do this…they mention their names before they mention any other titles”.

Court dismisses suit challenging Otiko’s ministerial appointment

The Supreme Court has dismissed the suit challenging the appointment of Otiko Djaba as Minister for Gender and Social Protection.

According to the court, it was unable to hear the case because the lawyer for the two plaintiffs, Godwin Tamakloe, did not possess a valid Solicitor General’s license at the time of issuing the writ.

Forestry Commission engages 7,000 farmers to reforest depleted forests

The Forestry Commission has engaged more than 7,000 farmers under the modified ‘Tuangya System’ to reforest two depleted forests in the Western and Ashanti regions.

The forests are the Nkawie Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region and the Sui Forest Reserve at Sefwi Wiawso in the Western Region.

Govt initiates moves to merge VRA, Bui Power Authority

The government has initiated moves to merge the Bui Power Authority (BPA) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) to make for a single point management of power generation in the country.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the BPA, Mr Fred Oware, who disclosed this, said a committee had been set up by the Cabinet to look into the modalities of the merger.

Ghana’s former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings has in a tribute to the late Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong, popularly known as Kaba, stated that journalists with a fair-minded approach to issues and with a good sense of balance in terms of objectivity are becoming rare.

He said, “a few too many media personnel are serving one purpose or another which seems to undermine the integrity of the profession. And indeed when somebody like this (Kaba) dies then we must consider it a serious loss.”

President to cut sod for Marine Drive Project on Friday

Ghana's quest to turn its coastlines of Accra into a tourism enclave will be given a shot in the arm on Friday as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cuts sod for the Marine Drive Project.

The project, which covers 241 acres, stretching from the Osu Christianborg Castle to the Centre for National Culture (Arts Centre), has been divided into three phases.

Customs impounds 300 vehicles; Owners evaded duties : VIDEO

Three hundred uncustomed luxury vehicles have been impounded by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in eight months.

The vehicles were impounded during an exercise conducted between May and December this year to check the increasing sale of vehicles smuggled from neighbouring countries, particularly Togo, to Ghana.
