NAGRAT inaugurates head office in Accra

A seven-storey national head office building for the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has been inaugurated in Accra. Work on the office complex, with 37 office cubicles, three conference rooms, a library and a basement car park, among other facilities, took two and half years to complete.

The head office, which is known as the NAGRAT Lyceum, has a large symbolic sculptural pen on the eastern side, which is to serve as a reminder of the symbolic tool of the teaching profession.

The attention of the Board of Directors and Management of Bosomtwe Rural Bank Limited has been drawn to a publication on page 30 of the Saturday, March 11, 2017 edition of the Daily Graphic under the heading “Court reverses termination of former Bosomtwe Rural Bank GM”.

The bank is hereby issuing this rejoinder to clear the erroneous impression that Felix Owusu-Achiaw, the dismissed General Manager of the bank, is painting to the public.

Ultimatum to galamsey operators ends as 545 excavators leave mining sites

Following a three-week ultimatum to illegal miners to end their operations, 545 excavators have been moved from illegal mining sites to open grounds in mining communities. Additionally,  1,148 out of 2,300 dredging equipment have also been moved from illegal mining sites to main grounds.

As of April 14, 2017, illegal miners had turned in a number of excavators in the following mining towns: Akim Oda, 20; Asankragua, 120; Assin Fosu, 20; Bibiani, 120; Dunkwa, 200; Konongo, 25, and Tarkwa, 40.

Ghanaian engineers take charge of Ghana Gas

Indigenous engineers at the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) have finally taken over technical operations of the country’s premier natural gas processing plant at Atuabo in the Western Region.

Consequently, the company has dispensed with the services of expatriate engineers and Sinopec, a Chinese company, which had been in charge of operations of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant (GPP) since November 2014.

Govt unveils agric blueprint ­­to provide food, create jobs

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday launched the government’s flagship agricultural programme: ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’, which is designed to increase agricultural production, ensure sustainable supply of food at cheaper cost and create jobs for the youth.

The programme is expected to create about 750,000 jobs in both direct and indirect employment, especially for the youth.

Cocoa buying company to pay GH¢1.15m bonus to farmers

About 14,400 cocoa farmers are to benefit from bonuses totalling GH¢1,147,696 for the 2017/2018 season. Each farmer is expected to receive GH¢8 as bonus on each bag of cocoa sold to Utz Limited, an Indian company.

The payment of the bonus is being facilitated by the Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Limited, a subsidiary of Barry Callebaut, an international chocolate firm and local representative of Utz Limited.

2 shot dead; 2 injured at Nkonya Ahenkro in renewed conflict

Two people were shot dead at Nkonya Ahenkro in the Volta region on Wednesday night, whilst two others were also injured in a renewed conflict in the area.

The Kpando Police Commander who confirmed the incident in a radio interview on Accra based Joy FM, said it happened between 7 and 8pm.

Plan International project to encourage girls to study Maths, Science

There is a wrong perception among some female students who perceive Science and Mathematics as ‘difficult subjects’ and a no-go area where they cannot study to perform creditably.

To correct this impression, the Central Programme Unit (CPU) of Plan International Ghana, a child rights Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) is implementing a project in the Ekumfi District in the Central Region to motivate girls to develop interest in the study of Science and Mathematics at the junior high school (JHS) level.

Digital Reading Summit underway in Accra

The Fourth West Africa Digital Reading Summit that focuses on the power of the mobile phone for education opened in Accra yesterday.

About 200 technology experts, educationists, publishers and teachers from Ghana and six other West African countries are participating in the two-day conference on the theme: “The power of digital in learning: How communities are harnessing mobile technology and digital reading to promote continuous learning”.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr John Peter Amewu has assured that all the withdrawn excavators will not return to illegal mining sites.

A number of excavator operators have reportedly withdrawn their equipment from illegal mining sites as the ultimatum given by government to clamp down on illegal mining expired on Wednesday.

Govt announces plan to settle NHIS indebtedness

The Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has announced that all debts owed by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) as of May 2016 would be settled by the close of this week.

He also added that government was injecting “some good amount of money” any moment from now to enable the authority settle about three months of the outstanding arrears by end of June this year and after that there will be monthly releases from the Ministry of Finance.

One district one warehouse to support 'Planting for Food and Jobs'

Government has announced plans to construct a warehouse in each of the 216 districts in the country to support the 'Planting for Food and Jobs campaign' which was launched at Goaso in the Brong Ahafo region on Wednesday.

According to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the warehouses would be crucial in helping to mitigate post harvest losses.

Launching the programme, President Akufo-Addo said it would be a 1000-metric tonne capacity warehouse, to help handle produce and store the anticipated surpluses under the programme.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday launched government’s flagship agricultural programme, ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’, at Goaso in the Asunafo Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Modelled on the highly successful ‘Operation Feed Yourself (OFY)’ programme of the 1970s, the initiative is to be driven by 200,000 farmers selected nationwide and individuals willing to cultivate vegetables and other crops in their backyard.

Police arrest 2 for possessing 500 rounds ammunition

The police have arrested two persons at Agbogbloshie in Accra for allegedly possessing 500 rounds of ammunition.

The suspects were identified as Imoro Abdul Wahab, 25, a scrap dealer, and Kweku Amankwah, 58, a registered arms dealer.

A legal practitioner, Captain (retd) Nkrabeah Effah-Dartey has professed his version of how to fight the illegal mining menace and suggested that, “sitting in Accra to ban galamsey is a joke.”

In a radio interview on Accra-based Okay FM on Wednesday, Mr Effah-Darteh said illegal mining was “endemic” because it was easy to find gold in every part of Ghana and hence it was a source of livelihood for the youth.

The Public Records and Archives Administration Department (PRAAD) has launched a project to digitise its archival materials and also host them online.

Environment Ministry gets 12-member advisory board

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has inaugurated a 12-member Advisory Board for the ministry and charged them to draw on their expertise to enhance the operations of the ministry.

The board is expected to advise the sector minister on policies, planning and operational strategies.

Three groups commend govt on first 100 days

The first 100 days of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has been described as “good” but with more room for improvement by the heads of two institutions, the National Peace Council (NPC) and the Christian Council of Ghana in separate interviews in Accra.

However, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, said the first steps in getting the economic fundamentals right for the creation of jobs had been excellent.
