Over 5000 teenage pregnancies recorded in Central Region in 2016

Five thousand one hundred and six (5106) teenage pregnancies were recorded in the Central Region between July and December 2016.

Of the total, 430 were recorded among females aged between 13 and 15, while the remaining 4682 pregnancies were recorded among females aged between 16 and 19.

Labone SHS tops all in BlueCrest quiz

meteorologists in the country should use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve on their services, the Senior Advancement Officer at the Pentecost University College, Rev. Dr Emmanuel Apea, has urged.

He said for instance, expertise in ICT was needed to help regional and national meteorological services by collecting data at local levels to improve upon their prediction of the weather.

Govt steps up action to rescue trafficked children - Otiko Djaba

Fifty-five trafficked children were rescued in joint operations conducted by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Ghana Police Service along the Volta Lake between 2015 and 2016.

During the same period, the operations, which were supported by the International Justice Mission, saw the arrest of 27 suspected child and human traffickers.

The Nationwide Medical Insurance Company Limited has launched a new product which seeks to offer comprehensive health insurance for persons in the informal sector.

Dubbed “Mr health”, the first ever micro-health insurance plan in Ghana, is aimed at meeting the essential healthcare needs of persons in the informal sector.

After two and half weeks of bragging by both current and past senior high school (SHS) students over claims that their alma mater was the best in the country, the stage is now set to determine which school is actually the best when the three finalists at this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz battle it out.

The clash, which is scheduled for today, June 29, at the National Theatre in Accra, would have defending champions, Adisadel College, lock horns with three-time winners, Prempeh College, and St. Thomas Aquinas School, the only day school to have won the competition in 2013.

Rooftop solar programme faces financial crisis

The National Rooftop Solar Programme introduced by the government to help address the energy crisis in the country is facing financial challenges from two fronts.

First, the Energy Commission is unable to raise GH¢533 million required to fully implement the programme to subsidise rooftop solar panels for homes and companies.

Ghana to host 45th African Insurance Organisations confab

The Ghana Insurance Association (GIA) has inaugurated a 12-member committee to plan a successful hosting of the 45th African Insurance Organisations (AIO) Conference and Annual General Assembly scheduled to be held in Accra next year.

The conference is expected to be attended by about 1,000 delegates from the insurance industry across the continent and beyond.

NCA urges electronic equipment dealers to certify their products

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has asked dealers of electronic communication equipment to certify their products or risk having them destroyed when they are discovered to be substandard.

It listed television sets, mobile phones, tablets, modems, set-top boxes and laptops as some of the equipment manufacturers and importers need to certify in line with the regulation.

Roads Minister directs demolition of illegal houses, structures on Weija Hills

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has directed the Ga South Municipal Assembly to demolish illegal houses and structures that have been put up on the Weija Hills immediately as part of measures to stop the erosion occurring on the hills from generating into a bigger problem.

He also tasked the assembly to stop the activities of illegal sand winning and stone quarrying on the hills to prevent the weakening of the rocky hill and debris from being washed down onto the Kasoa-Accra road.

Nurses, midwives challenged to take up leadership roles

A United Kingdom (UK)-based health specialist, Dr Cecilia Anim (CBE), has asked Ghanaian registered nurses and midwives to position themselves for leadership positions in the country, both within the profession and outside it.

She observed that the participation of nurses and midwives in the country’s decision-making processes was critical for development because the profession dealt directly with society.

3 Arrested for evading tax on diesel

The managing directors (MDs) of three companies in Tema have been busted for allegedly importing diesel without authority and evading tax totalling GH¢470,000.

They are alleged to have succeeded in categorising the diesel as waste oil, for which reason the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) waived all taxes on the product.

NGO calls on Graphic to help fight child labour

A Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), MACEE Foundation, committed to fighting child labour, has called on Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), for support.

Torgbui Gobah Tengey, who led a delegation to call on the Managing Director of the GCGL, Mr. Kenneth Ashigbey, said most children were not being treated well and had to do hazardous work, especially those living in the coastal areas.

21 Charged with killing a chief of Ardeyman

Twenty-one people alleged to be involved in the murder of the Development Chief of Ardeyman near Accra, Nii Tettey Saban, were yesterday remanded in police custody by the Adjabeng District Court.

The court, presided over by Mr Isaac Addo, remanded the accused persons for the police to conduct further investigations into the case.

Court slaps 45-year jail term on armed robber

A Sunyani Circuit Court has sentenced a 22-year-old apprentice electrician, Kingsford Kwaku Yeboah, to 45 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for engaging in different robbery incidents in and around Sunyani.

He pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, causing harm and robbery in three separate armed robbery cases.

Conference on power expansion in Africa underway in Accra

About 230 delegates from 33 countries have gathered in Accra to brainstorm and find solutions to the low electricity penetration in Africa.

The delegates are attending a three-day power conference on the theme: “Harnessing energy, information technology for affordable electrification of Africa.”

The conference will also explore the emerging opportunities to leverage information, communication and technology (ICT) to build solutions for power systems across Africa.

Two teenagers arrested with 30 parcels of "wee"

The police have arrested two persons for attempting to transport 30 parcels of some substance suspected to be marijuana to Nkurakan in the Eastern Region.

The suspects, 19-year-old Evelyn Adade Kokor and Felix Gyimah, 18 were said to have concealed the package in two sacks of cassava.

8-Member committee to investigate contaminated fuel

The Ministry of Energy has initiated steps to investigate the purported release of five million litres of contaminated fuel onto the market by the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST).

A statement released Wednesday and signed by the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko said the Ministry is in the process of setting up an eight-member investigate committee into the matter.
