EC staff petition Prez to remove Charlotte Osei

A group, calling itself concerned workers of the Electoral Commission (EC) have petitioned the President and the Chief Justice to begin impeachment processes against the Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei.

In a six-page petition dated Thursday, July 13, 2017 and signed by their counsel, Maxwell Opoku-Agyemang, the group accused the EC Boss of misconduct, citing breaches of some provisions of the 1992 Constitution as well as the Public Procurement Act, Act 663.

Fire guts office in Parliament

Fire last night gutted an office on the 10th floor of the Job 600 building serving as offices for the 275 Members of Parliament (MPs).

The timely intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) contained the fire.

The few MPs and officers of the Parliamentary Service who were on the floor at the time of the fire around 6:30 p.m. escaped unhurt.

Police nab leader of fraud, car robbery gang in Accra

A 36-year-old man, Nene Tetteh, believed to be the kingpin of a fraud and car robbery gang that operates in Accra has been arrested by the police.

A Toyota Fortuner and a Hyundai Santafe, believed to have been robbed from a judge and a banker respectively, have been retrieved from the suspect.

The suspect, who is said to have masterminded the car robbery operations under the pretext of being a car dealer, was arrested on July 14 this year.

Submit fees, levies to Parliament for approval - Prof. Yankah tells vice-chancellors of public varsities

The Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, has asked the vice-chancellors of Ghana to seek parliamentary approval through the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) for proposed fees and charges they intend to collect from students.

He said over the years, the Fees and Charges Act 2009 (Act 793), which was amended by a Legislative Instrument in 2016, LI2228 had not been followed by heads of tertiary institutions, who had resorted to fixing fees and other levies without recourse to the law.

Economy on path of recovery following critical interventions - President

After six months in office, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday gave account of his stewardship, saying a number of critical interventions instituted by the government had succeeded in helping the economy recover from the mess in which it was when his government took over.

Gov't to renegotiate $14 million Veep’s villa contract

Government says it will renegotiate the $14 million contract awarded by the previous government for the construction of a state residence for Vice Presidents.

President Akufo-Addo applauds media for holding government accountable

Media houses have been highly commended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for their fortitude and dedication to the principles of holding the government accountable and shedding light on its policies for the benefit of the citizenry.

Govt audits workers contribution to Tier Two pension scheme

The government has instituted an audit into the tier two pension scheme to clarify the deductions of public sector workers since 2010.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, who disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, said the audit was necessary to settle the disagreement between workers and the government over the amount due.

Former Haiti PM promotes digital economy

GHS partners PATH-Ghana to reduce neonatal deaths in Ashanti

Health-related organisations have joined hands with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to implement the Make Every Baby Count Initiative (MEBCI), a project sponsored by the Children Investment Fund Foundation of the United Kingdom  (UK).

The project aims at contributing significantly to the MDG 4 by reducing the national newborn death rates from 32 per 1,000 live births in 2011 to 21 per 1,000 live births by 2018, which is in line with a Ghana National Newborn Health Strategy and Action Plan (2014-2018).

The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has launched a $225,000 award scheme to reward private sector actors who will support finalists in a National Sanitation Challenge programme to successfully implement their liquid waste management strategy proposals.

The National Sanitation Challenge is a competition among metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) requiring them to design and implement liquid waste management strategies.

According to him, he had been the target of many irresponsible media publications for a number of years.
