10 Chinese arrested for alleged involvement in galamsey

Ten Chinese have been arrested in connection with illegal mining (otherwise called galamsey) at Tamso in the Tarkwa municipality in the Western Region.

They were arrested by a combined team of the police and some members of a voluntary group known as Against Environmental Degradation.

Phone dealers unhappy over decision to reduce threshold for foreign businesses

Mobile Phone and Accessory Dealers Association (MPAADA) has expressed misgivings that a decision to reduce the one-million dollar threshold required by law to permit a foreigner to do business in Ghana will collapse their businesses.

The concern was raised at an emergency meeting by the association to react to a statement allegedly made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Mr Yofi Grant, at a press conference to the effect that his outfit would reduce the threshold to promote foreign businesses in the country.

Reconstruction work on the two bridges that collapsed in the Northern and the Upper East regions is to start soon.

Funds have been secured for the reconstruction work on the two bridges to begin by the close of this month.

Self-styled pastor dupes 4,000 people in Sekondi/Takoradi

A self-acclaimed Man of God at the centre of a multi-faceted scam that has rocked the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis has been arrested by the police.

Scores of alleged victims of Apostle Joel Amenu (the suspect) rushed to the police station to lodge complaints against him when news broke that he had been arrested.

Apostle Amenu is alleged to have defrauded hundreds of people and institutions in the metropolis of money said to be in the hundreds of thousands of cedis on the pretext of giving them soft loans for their businesses and offering them opportunities to acquire vehicles on hire purchase.

Govt commended for campaign against galamsey activities

The Project Manager of Cassius Mining Limited, a private mining firm at Gbane in the Upper East Region, Mr Andrew Head, has commended the government and state institutions such as the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for evolving strategies to clamp down on illegal mining (galamsey) in the country.

He observed that those strategies were yielding positive results, stressing that it would ultimately help inject sanity into the mining sector and also protect the environment, including water sources, from pollution and further degradation.

Ghana Chapter of Network of Professional Women in place - To build capacity of women in water, sanitation

The Network of Professional Women in Water and Sanitation-Ghana Chapter, an initiative aimed at building the capacity of women operating in the water and sanitation sector, has been inaugurated in Accra.

The initiative by the African Water Association (AFWA), funded by the Ghana Water Company Limited, will create a platform for exchange of experiences, good practices and capacity building in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

Petition: EC Chair Charlotte Osei to sue accusers

The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Mrs Charlotte Osei has threatened to sue her accusers in relation to the petition which has been sent to the presidency asking for her removal on grounds of “misconduct.”

WAEC releases 2017 WASSCE results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results of candidates who took the 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates (WASSCE).

The Council says it will soon despatch the results to the schools and candidates are advised to contact their heads of school for their results, a statement signed and issued by Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC said on Wednesday.

Presidency receives petition asking EC chair to be removed

The Presidency has confirmed receiving a petition from some staff of the Electoral Commission asking that the chairperson, Mrs Charlotte Osei should be removed.

Chief Justice calms magistrates, judges over strike threat

The Chief Justice, Ms Justice Sophia Akuffo, has stepped in to calm the nerves of magistrates and judges over their unpaid allowances.

According to the President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges, Mr Justice Victor Ofoe, “there was tension among magistrates and judges over unpaid allowances and benefits, but the Chief Justice had stepped in and assured us she would follow up for us to get our due”.

Job 600 building closed down

The Job 600 building which houses 275 Members of Parliament (MPs) was closed down yesterday following the fire that gutted an office on the 10th floor of the building last Tuesday night.

Officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) cordoned the building as they began investigations to establish the cause of the fire.

EC staff petition Prez to remove Charlotte Osei

A group, calling itself concerned workers of the Electoral Commission (EC) have petitioned the President and the Chief Justice to begin impeachment processes against the Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei.

In a six-page petition dated Thursday, July 13, 2017 and signed by their counsel, Maxwell Opoku-Agyemang, the group accused the EC Boss of misconduct, citing breaches of some provisions of the 1992 Constitution as well as the Public Procurement Act, Act 663.

Fire guts office in Parliament

Fire last night gutted an office on the 10th floor of the Job 600 building serving as offices for the 275 Members of Parliament (MPs).

The timely intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) contained the fire.

The few MPs and officers of the Parliamentary Service who were on the floor at the time of the fire around 6:30 p.m. escaped unhurt.

Police nab leader of fraud, car robbery gang in Accra

A 36-year-old man, Nene Tetteh, believed to be the kingpin of a fraud and car robbery gang that operates in Accra has been arrested by the police.

A Toyota Fortuner and a Hyundai Santafe, believed to have been robbed from a judge and a banker respectively, have been retrieved from the suspect.

The suspect, who is said to have masterminded the car robbery operations under the pretext of being a car dealer, was arrested on July 14 this year.

Submit fees, levies to Parliament for approval - Prof. Yankah tells vice-chancellors of public varsities

The Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, has asked the vice-chancellors of Ghana to seek parliamentary approval through the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) for proposed fees and charges they intend to collect from students.

He said over the years, the Fees and Charges Act 2009 (Act 793), which was amended by a Legislative Instrument in 2016, LI2228 had not been followed by heads of tertiary institutions, who had resorted to fixing fees and other levies without recourse to the law.

Economy on path of recovery following critical interventions - President

After six months in office, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday gave account of his stewardship, saying a number of critical interventions instituted by the government had succeeded in helping the economy recover from the mess in which it was when his government took over.
