Festival to unearth talents ‘unveiled’

The Copyright Owners of Ghana has initiated the ‘Atuu’ Festival of Arts (AFA) to unearth new talents for job creation as an effort to promote the industry.

The three collective management of the copyright owners are Audiovisual Rights Society of Ghana (ARSOG), Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) and the Reprographic Rights Organisation of Ghana (COPYGHANA).

Check encroachment on govt lands - Amewu charges U/E Region Lands Commission

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Peter Amewu, has charged members of the newly constituted Upper East Regional Lands Commission to check encroachment on government lands in the area.

He also urged them to find immediate solutions to the wanton dissipation of lands by customary claimants who did not consider the economic and security implications of their actions.

Customs levy impeding growth of transit trade

Stakeholders in the shipping business are calling for the removal of a US$200 levy charged on every consignment meant for export by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

They explained that such levy did not make it attractive for exporters from neighbouring landlocked countries to do business in Ghana, and as a result, dwindling fortunes from transit trade.

YIEDIE holds job fair in Takoradi

More than 7,900 young people have benefited from skills training under the Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative for Empowerment (YIEDIE) under the Global Communities project.

By YIEDIE’s projections, an estimated 250,000 Ghanaians entering the labour market every year could not be absorbed through existing employment avenues unless effective policies for job creation are in place.

Government must develop national policy on e-agriculture - University don

Prof. Michael A. Tagoe Provost, University of Ghana, College of Education/Dean, School of Continuing and Distance Education, has called on the government to develop a national policy on the application of information and communications technology (ICT) to agriculture, what is known as e-agriculture.

22 US volunteers in to teach

Twenty-two United States (US) citizens who are in the country to undertake two years of voluntary work in the education sector have been inducted.

The volunteers, who have been deployed throughout the country to teach in basic and second cycle institutions, will be teaching mainly mathematics, science and art.

They have been posted to mostly rural areas and deprived communities and schools where teachers are lacking. They will be transported to their locations on Sunday, August 13, 2017, to begin their work.

Local Government Advisory Board inaugurated

Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo has inaugurated a 12-member Ministerial Advisory Board for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and tasked members to ensure the regular payment of property tax at the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs).

“The poorest administered taxes in Ghana are the property tax. I will entreat you the board to show interest and work as a team to achieve the objective of the ministry,” Mr Osafo-Maafo said at the ceremony in Accra.

Iranian company to build chocolate factory in Ghana - Dr Akoto

Ghana is set to sign a record-breaking agreement with an Iranian private company for the setting up of a 300,000 tonnes cocoa processing company to produce chocolate for both local and international markets.

 The two countries had earlier signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Tehran, Iran, and the final signing of the agreement is expected to take place in Accra within the next two months when actual timelines will be outlined.

GhIE denies claims of shoddy work by its members

The Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) has refuted claims of shoddy service rendered by Ghanaian engineering practitioners working in Ghana.

It said the perception among the public was that the poor infrastructure in the country was due to the failure of engineering practitioners to perform their duties effectively.

It added that the perception followed recent public criticisms, especially by the Senior Minister, the Minister of Works and Housing and the Minister of Roads and Highways, about the work of Ghanaian engineers.

World Bank leads search for funds to develop Pwalugu Dam

THE World Bank is leading three state institutions, including the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), to source for funds to develop the Pwalugu Dam in the Upper East Region into a multipurpose facility that can generate electricity, control flooding and irrigate some 20,000 hectares of land.

Earlier this year, the bank, together with the SADA, the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Youth Employment and Development Agency (GYEEDA) commenced a financial feasibility study into the project that is expected to pave the way for actual work to begin.

Accused in Ardayman murder case denied bail

Twenty-five people accused of the murder of Nii Tetteh Saban, a development chief of Ardayman, near Accra, were yesterday refused bail by the Adjabeng District Court.

The court, presided over by Mr Isaac Addo, ruled that it had no jurisdiction to grant bail and, subsequently remanded the accused into police custody.

A man is in the grips of the police for allegedly defrauding several women under false pretences as a doctor.

The Police say the suspect, Faith Mensah Tekpor is a serial "confident trickster" who poses as a medical doctor with several names such as Dr Jeff Addow, Dr Alvin Owusu, Dr Alvin Annan, Dr Fiifi Owusu, Dr Collins Amoah and Dr Alvin Mensah to defraud people.

Yaw Boadi, the mechanic at Alajo in Accra who was shot on Tuesday following a misunderstanding with a motorist has died, the police have confirmed.

Boadi was on admission at the Intensive Care Unit of the Ridge Hospital but he died on Wednesday.

Stop the galamsey and come for proper license - Amewu tells Shaanxi

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr John Peter Amewu has stated that government will not tolerate mining companies that have secured the required licenses yet their mode of operations do not conform to laid down regulations or the reason for which those licenses were acquired.

He expressed regret that some of those companies eventually ended up evading a lot of taxes and they also failed to pay royalties on their mining concessions hence depriving the nation of the needed revenue for development purposes.

American and Danish companies find it difficult to do business in Ghana because of the demand for illegal payments, the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Robert P. Jackson, has stated.

Government to write off GH¢103.1m loans owed by defunct SOEs

The government is planning to write off GH¢103.1 million loans that have been granted to state-owned enterprises (SOEs), which became defunct more than 20 years ago.

Some of the loans are more than 20 years old and have been occurring in government records year in year out.

Answering questions on the 2015 Auditor General’s Report before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament in Accra yesterday, the Controller and Accountant-General, Mr Eugene Ofosuhene, said the SOEs were defunct and could not be traced.

Major road rehabilitation in the offing  to deal with deteriorating conditions — Amoako-Atta

A massive road rehabilitation programme is set to come on stream in the next few months to put some bad roads in Accra and across the country in good shape, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has said.

In an interview in Accra yesterday, the minister said tenders had been opened for such jobs and some bids were being evaluated in connection with the programme, under which the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), the Department of Feeder Roads and the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) would be working to ensure the rehabilitation of poor roads.

Govt to revive Bonsa Tyre, Aboso Glass factories - Akufo-Addo

The Bonsa Tyre and the Aboso Glass factories in the Western Region are to be revived under the government’s one-district, one-factory programme, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said.

Additionally, he said, a fertiliser plant would be established at Jomoro, also in the region, through the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and the Ghana Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) to create more job opportunities for the people.
