Institute of Surveyors to support galamsey fight

The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) says it will effectively collaborate with the government to sustain the fight against illegal mining.

The Chairman of the Land Surveying Division of the GhIS, Mr John K. Amaglo, said the GhIS had drones that could capture and expose galamsey operations across the country.

Kumasi East Rotary Club gets new president

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ruma Fertility Hospital, Dr Rudolph Adageba Kantum, has been inducted the new President of the Kumasi East Rotary Club.

He was decorated with the Chain of Office and Manual of Procedure by the Rotarian Past President of the club, Mr Anthony Osei-Poku.

Ashanti Department of Children to celebrate National Children’s Day

The Ashanti Regional Department of Children under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is to celebrate the 2017 National Children’s Day in Kumasi tomorrow Thursday, August 31, 2017.

The durbar, which will be held at the Christ Apostolic Church International at Amapabame in Kumasi, will be on the theme: “Education – The Right of the Child.”

Stop making fun of children on social media — Child Rights International

Child Rights International (CRI), a non-governmental organisation concerned with the welfare of children, has condemned the act of dehumanising children through mockery on social media.

The group said filming children who were unable to read or recite the pledge or national anthem or recording videos of children who were being encouraged to use profane words or engage in sexual activities and posting them on social media platforms were unlawful.

Police Admin will rectify anomalies in promotions — IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has announced that the Police Service is devising plans to rectify the anomalies associated with promotions in the Ghana Police Service.

Mr Asante-Apeatu made the announcement when he addressed a workshop for officers and men on a transformation agenda for the service in Accra on Tuesday.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has undertaken a fumigation exercise in some major markets in the Savelugu-Nanton Municipality and the West Gonja and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba districts in the Northern Region.

Water supply improves in parts of Western Region following rehabilitation of equipment

Obsolete pumps and control panels impeding operations at the Daboase intake points of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Western Region have finally been replaced after five decades in operation.

The project, estimated at GH¢25 million, involved the replacement of the pumps at various strategic areas such as the Axim, Bosomase and Inchaban intakes.
The project is expected to improve water treatment and supply in the area.

Paperless port operations to be seamless — Customs boss

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has called on the public not to be apprehensive about the implementation of paperless processes at the country’s ports aimed at reducing the time for doing business there and cost.

The implementation of the policy, which will take off on Monday, September 4, 2017, following the declaration of September 1 as a public holiday, is creating apprehension among the importing public.

Bui Power compensates five farmers

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has released GH¢42,276 as a compensation package for five farmers whose crops have been affected by the Bui Power solar project located at Bole in the Northern Region.

A statement issued by the authority and signed by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Fred Oware, said the payment to the affected farmers would be made today.

All set for roll-out of free SHS

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says all is set for the roll-out of the free senior high school (SHS) policy, come September 2017.

Currently, all SHSs have received all the core textbooks ready for distribution to all first-year students under the free SHS policy.

Akua Donkor robbers handed 120 years

Three men, including the General Secretary and the Central Regional Chairman of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), were on Tuesday sentenced to a total of 120 years’ imprisonment by the Accra Circuit Court for robbing the Founder of the party, Madam Akua Donkor.

The convicts — Yakubu Yusif, the Central Regional Chairman of the GFP; Barnabas Kayase, the General Secretary, and Abdul Razak Shaibu, who works for the GPRTU — were found guilty by the court on two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

The First Secretary-General of the African Research Universities Alliances (ARUA), Professor Ernest Aryeetey, has challenged industry players in Africa to invest in the education sector and academic activities to produce skilful and well-equipped graduates for the job market.

He expressed the concern that companies and other institutions were more interested in sponsoring entertainment programmes to the neglect of the academia.

FDA bans hydroquinone

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has, with immediate effect, banned the importation and use of hydroquinone in the country.

 “The FDA wishes to remind the public that hydroquinone ceases to be part of ingredients permitted in cosmetic products on the Ghanaian market with immediate effect,” the Chief Executive Officer of the authority, Mrs Delese Mimi Darko, told the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra Monday.

Man, 35, arrested for allegedly defrauding Customs Division applicants

A 35-year-old man who allegedly used WhatsApp to defraud people on the pretext of helping them to secure employment with the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been arrested.

The suspect, Nick Kusemu Kafui, was arrested at East Legon last Sunday when he went to collect a cheque for GHC4,000 from an official of the Customs Division of the GRA who had feigned interest in his alleged scam.

Throw out EC Chair – Opoku-Agyemang appeals to court

Mr Maxwell Opoku-Agyemang, the lawyer who was sued by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) for professional misconduct, has asked the High Court to strike out the suit against him.

He has, in the alternative, asked the court to grant an order of interlocutory injunction to restrain the lawyer for the EC Chair, Mrs Charlotte Osei, Mr Thaddeus Sory, and other lawyers from his law firm from further defending her.

Ghana Library Authority holds reading clinic for students, pupils

The acting Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mrs Rebecca Akita, has advocated a national policy and regulatory framework on reading to ensure standard and best practice.

 “We need a national reading policy that will establish standards regarding lingua franca, content, pedagogy, coordination, objectives, qualifications of reading instructors or guides, research and development related to the teaching and learning of reading,” she said.

Women, youth unemployment fuelling sub-regional crime

Between 3,800 and 5,000 women and girls are said to be victims of human trafficking in the West African sub-region yearly.

As victims, they experience violent extremism and other criminal activities, as well as indignities, including death; gross human rights abuses; abductions; sex slavery; rape and other forms of sexual exploitation and abuse.

Chiefs ask government to restore farmlands devastated by illegal mining

Some chiefs in the Central Region whose lands have been badly devastated by illegal mining have appealed to government to as a matter of urgency help to restore farmlands.

They noted that many farmlands for the cultivation of food crops had been badly abused by the activities of "galamseyers" which could affect food production in the communities.
