Korean Ambassador lauds Akufo-Addo’s One –District- One- factory initiative

The Korean Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Sungsoo Kim has lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's One District, One Factory initiative, saying it will help in the socio-economic development of the nation.

The ‘One-District-One-Factory’ programme targets to establish at least one factory or enterprise in each of the 216 districts of Ghana as a means of creating economic growth poles that would accelerate the development of those areas and create jobs for the teeming youth.

Two people have been picked up in connection with the missing operating software for the dancing fountain at the Rattray Park in Kumasi.

The software had reportedly been saved on a USB drive (pen drive), which has been allegedly stolen.

Student in court for biting off cousin’s ear

A 28 year old student who allegedly bit off his cousin’s ears over land litigation has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Ayiku Fayorse charged with offensive conduct and causing harm, has pleaded not guilty.

The court presided over by Mrs Jan Harriet Akweley Quaye admitted Fayorse to bail in the sum of GH¢30,000.00 by two sureties who are gainfully employed.

CID probes corruption allegations against two deputy chiefs of staff

The Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service has began investigations into corruption allegations against the two deputy chiefs of staff by hiplife musician Kwame A Plus and the New Patriotic Party's Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong. 

According to the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin, the two have been contacted to provide evidence for their corruption allegations against Mr Francis Asenso-Boakye and Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor.

“I know for a fact that as of yesterday (Tuesday), the CID made contact with A-Plus and Kennedy Agyapong with regard to the allegations they made against the two deputies of the chief of staff," he told Accra-based radio station, Joy FM Wednesday morning.

Political will needed to ban plastic bags

The spectre of plastic waste strewn over empty spaces and in waterways in our cities, towns and villages remains a blot on the image of the country.

Official figures estimate that only two per cent of the about 22,000 tonnes of plastic waste generated yearly in the country are recycled, with the remaining 98 per cent finding place with waste management companies who send them to landfill sites and into drains, water bodies and other open places, including the streets.

Trial of 3 Russian, Ukrainian “galamseyers” to start on October 12

An Accra Circuit Court has fixed October 12 to start hearing the case of four  foreign nationals who were arrested at Manso-Tontokrom for their involvement in illegal mining in the Ashanti Region.

The four who are of Russian and Ukrainian origins have been charged with conspiracy to undertaking small scale mining without license and undertaking small scale mining without license.

They are Farid Isaev, Vadim Potokia, Saerhii Chepurniy all engineers and Genadiy Rubee, a Site Engineer of Geo Professional Services, a Mining company.

LEAP expanded to cover seven health conditions and diseases

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms Otiko Afisa Djaba, has announced the addition of people living with seven conditions and diseases to the beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme as a way of easing their burden.

She announced that fistula, haemophilia, cerebral palsy, autism, hole in heart, sickle cell diseases and cancer sufferers had been added to the programme to receive bi-monthly cash to ensure that nobody was left behind in the social net.

‘Fight against corruption needs holistic approach’

The Majority Leader in Parliament and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called for a holistic national effort involving all stakeholders to weed out corruption in the country.

He said leaving the war on the menace to a specific institution would be an exercise in futility since the domain of corrupt practices cut across all facets of national life.

Embrace fight against galamsey – Nana Ama Dokua appeals to public

A town hall meeting was held in Kyebi in the Eastern Region on Tuesday to sensitise the public to the effects of illegal mining on the environment, with a call on the public to embrace the fight against the galamsey menace.

A Deputy Minister of Information, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Agyei, who made the call, said if care was not taken, the environment would be completely destroyed within the next decade, to the extent that there would be no place to build hospitals, construct roads, embark on water supply systems and carry out farming activities.

Canada pledges support for local govt system

The Canadian government has affirmed its commitment to support the local government system in Ghana.

The Canadian High Commissioner, Ms Heather Cameron, said the German and the United States (US) governments would administer a grant on Canada’s behalf to support Ghana in the mobilisation of tax revenue at the district levels.

Teacher trainee allowance ready; Govt to spend GH¢144m per academic year

About 45,000 teacher trainees in 41 public colleges of education will, from next month, receive GH¢204 each as monthly allowance from the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).

Although each student is entitled to GH¢400, part of that — GH¢196 — will go directly to the colleges to pay for trainees’ utilities and feeding.

The amount is, however, GH¢248 less than the GH¢452 the trainees were receiving after deductions before the allowance was scrapped in the 2013/2014 academic year by the previous government.

GCB Bank donates GH¢100,000 to Sierra Leone disaster victims

GCB Bank has donated GH¢100,000 to support victims of the Sierra Leonean mudslide disaster.

The donation was in response to the distress call by the government and people of Sierra Leone following the 14th August 2017 mudslide which took the lives of over 400 people, and in line with GCB’s corporate social responsibility.

‘Seek approval for financial agreements that exceed a year’

The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, has asked metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to refrain from entering into agreements that bind them financially for more than one year without the prior approval of the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.

Per the directive, the MMDAS must also desist from any such agreement that will put a financial liability on the central government.

Police investigate alleged arson at Believers House of Worship

The police have opened investigations into a land dispute that allegedly resulted in the burning down of the Believers House of Worship Church at Okpoi Gonno, near Teshie in Accra.

A day after the act, the police invited the feuding parties as they seek to unravel the cause and identify the perpetrators of the crime that reduced some of the church’s property to ashes

EOCO raids company behind SSNIT deal

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday raided the premises of Perfect Business Systems (PBS), the Information Technology (IT) firm behind the controversial $72 million SSNIT software deal.

There were also unconfirmed reports that a similar raid had taken place at the residence of the Chief Executive Officer of PBS in Accra early Tuesday morning.

Scientist advocates for ‘One Child, One Egg’ a day

A hatchery and Egg Scientist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Jacob Alhassan Hamidu, has called on the government to infuse what he terms “Raising Chicken for Food” into the School Feeding Programme (SFP).

That, to him, would promote the ‘One Child, One Egg’ policy whose adoption is being advocated by a group of researchers.

Institute of Surveyors to support galamsey fight

The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) says it will effectively collaborate with the government to sustain the fight against illegal mining.

The Chairman of the Land Surveying Division of the GhIS, Mr John K. Amaglo, said the GhIS had drones that could capture and expose galamsey operations across the country.

Ashanti Department of Children to celebrate National Children’s Day

Stop making fun of children on social media — Child Rights International

Child Rights International (CRI), a non-governmental organisation concerned with the welfare of children, has condemned the act of dehumanising children through mockery on social media.

The group said filming children who were unable to read or recite the pledge or national anthem or recording videos of children who were being encouraged to use profane words or engage in sexual activities and posting them on social media platforms were unlawful.
