Akufo-Addo replies Ablakwa in USA; SHS has come to stay (audio)

 

One week after launching the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy, President  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given an assurance that the initiative has come to stay.

“The Free SHS Policy has come to stay and will be sustained,” he told a section of Ghanaian residents at a dinner held in his and the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo’s honour by the Ghana Mission in New York last Sunday.

Restore work permit of Indian businessman Sivaram in 7 days – Court to GIS

The Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Mr Kwame Takyi, has been given a seven-day ultimatum by the Accra High Court to restore the residence and work permits of an Indian businessman, Mr Ashok Kumar Sivaram.

In a judgement delivered on Monday, the court, presided over by Mrs Justice Naa Adoley Azu, also ordered the GIS boss or any person working under his authority not to make any attempt to deport the businessman or “harass him in whatever shape or form’’ prior to the issuance of the permits.

Mites invade sweet pepper farms in Winneba

Mites have invaded sweet pepper farms and destroyed large acres in the Effutu Municipality in the Central Region not long after fall army worms destroyed large acres of farms across the country.

About 100 acres of farmlands in the municipality have been taken over by the dreadful mites, forcing some of the farmers to abandon their farms, while others with the means have also relocated to other farms within the area to replant.

Stanbic Bank says the ‘school uniform’ dressing initiative introduced by its staff is solely a promotion aimed to encourage clients to buy into the bank’s education product and has nothing to do with the Free SHS programme.

In an interview, Mawuko Afadzinu Head of Marketing and Communications at Stanbic Bank Ghana, said the initiative was part of a plan adopted by the bank to help promote and draw attention of parents to their Education Plan product (Edu Plan) to ensure an uninterrupted quality education of wards of contributors to the scheme.

Free SHS policy giant step against poverty — Togbe Afede XIV 

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, says the implementation of the free senior high school (SHS) policy is a giant step by the government to liberate Ghanaians from the grips of poverty.

"We are excited about the free SHS because education is the most effective weapon against poverty," he said while addressing this year’s Asogli Yam festival in Ho last Saturday.

Two gambling centres shut down in Koforidua for allowing adolescents access

Two gaming facilities in Koforidua have been shut down by the Gaming Commission for allowing adolescents to patronise their facilities.

The premises of Winnabets and Premierbets were locked up after an inspection of their facilities by officials of the commission last Thursday.

Three more heads to roll over $72 million SSNIT software scandal

Three more officials of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) have been interdicted for their roles leading to the $72-million software scandal.

They are the Manager of its data management unit, Mr Joseph Appiah-Mensah; the Head of Networks, Mr Erasmus Acheampong Mensah and Harold Brookman-Amissah, who was in charge of the team that migrated data from the legacy system into Operational Business Suite (OBS).

UTAG begins nationwide strike

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has directed its members nationwide to withdraw their teaching services from today in solidarity with their counterparts at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

“It is our firm belief that the issue at the UEW is an attack on academic freedom and thus affects all public universities in Ghana,” it said in a statement signed by its National President, Dr Harry K. Agbanu.

Fifteen truckloads of smuggled petroleum products worth GH¢1.4 million have been impounded.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has proposed the designation of August 4 as Founders Day and September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

In line with that, he will push for legislation of the two dates as public holidays.

A statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Flagstaff House, Mr Eugene Arhin, and issued in Accra said the President had issued an Executive Instrument (EI) to commemorate this year’s celebration of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day on September 21 as a public holiday.

Christians begin pilgrimage to Israel

The first batch of Christian pilgrims left Ghana last Saturday to begin a seven-day visit to some of the historical and religious sites in Israel.

Led by the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, the 50-member pilgrims is made up of pastors, musicians and representatives of some religious bodies.

Yara Ghana to establish fertiliser plant

Yara Ghana Limited plans to set up a fertiliser plant in Ghana in the next five years to help produce and supply quality fertiliser at cheaper prices to support the country’s agricultural sector.

In the meantime, to curb the delays associated with clearing the finished product from the port, the company has initiated moves to construct a terminal at the Tema Port to facilitate the importation of fertiliser into the country.

CHAG rejects suggestions to legalise marijuana

The Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) has rejected a suggestion that marijuana should be legalised in Ghana.

According to CHAG, marijuana, popularly referred to as “wee” in Ghana, has been identified as one of the major causes of mental illness in the country.

Brakwa initiates four-year development plan

The Town Development Committee (TDC) and the people of Brakwa in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District in the Central Region have initiated a four-year development plan with the target of improving their standard of living.

This was announced at a durbar held in the town last Saturday to receive the newly appointed District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Isaac Odoom, who was on a familiarisation tour of the District.

Asante Akyem South District in the Ashanti Region may not meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on sanitation if drastic measures are not taken to improve the situation, particularly with regard to the provision of toilet facilities.

Banso a town in the district, with a population of about 4,000 people, has only one public toilet facility.
