Cocaine consumption report false - NACOB

The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) says a recent publication by a section of the media ranking Ghana 14th worldwide in the consumption of cocaine is false and unfounded.

Mr Francis Torkonoo, Executive Secretary of NACOB, stated that the said report failed to mention the period those statistics were generated, and appealed to the media to endeavour to crosscheck any drug related information before making them public.

MTN Foundation invests GH¢57m in 10 years

The MTN Ghana Foundation has invested over $13 million (about GH¢57 million in current exchange rate) in various social interventions in health care, education and economic empowerment over the past 10 years.

Among the corporate social investments of the foundation are the construction of school blocks, libraries and information and communications technology (ICT) centres, refurbishment and construction of maternity and children’s blocks in some hospitals, as well as educational scholarships for brilliant, needy students.

Akufo-Addo worried about events in Togo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed concern over recent developments in Togo, saying efforts are underway to ensure the restoration of peace and order in that country.

Making his first pronouncement on the political stalemate in Ghana’s immediate neighbour, the President said, “I cannot be idle.”

He recounted that 10 days ago, the President of Togo had visited him while he was on a tour of the Northern Region in Tamale, saying they had a length and productive discussion.

We’ll sustain farmers’ interest in cocoa industry despite drop in world market price — Aidoo

The Ghana Cocoa Board(COCOBOD) has stated that the only way to sustain the cocoa sector is to maintain the current producer price of GH¢7,600 per tonne, which translates into $1,808.

 It said even though it did not make any economic sense to maintain the current price in the wake of dwindling prices on the world market, the decision was necessary in order to sustain the interest of farmers in the industry.

Motivate staff to increase productivity than training them — Dr Richardson

A Management Development Educator and Consultant, Dr Pikay Richardson has advised Ghanaian business owners and leaders to use motivation to increase productivity rather than using training.

According to him, although training “is a necessary condition”, it was not a prerequisite to increasing productivity.

Poultry, Aquacultire and Livestock fair launched in Kumasi

The Second international Poultry, Aquaculture and Livestock Show (Pals) Africa, slated for November 2nd and 3rd, 2017 has been launched in Kumasi with the call on government to support such events to make them become a regular event on the calendar of the industry.

The CEO of Boris B Farms and Veterinary, Mr Boris Baidoo, who chaired the launch, said it was imperative that government supported such events as they would help to revive particularly the poultry sector which he said, “is currently an ailing one and needs government attention.”

Three anti-galamsey soldiers arrested for "extortion"

Three soldiers said to be members of the anti-galamsey taskforce, Operation Vanguard, are in the grip of the police for allegedly extorting monies from some residents in Tarkwa in the Western Region.

The three, said to be from the Airforce Base in Takoradi allegedly took both cash and gold from the gold dealers in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

Six police personnel to face service enquiry

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has ordered a service enquiry against six police officers who were caught on video collecting money from drivers at the Inchaban barrier in the Western Region.

The six are Chief Inspector Jones Osei Asante, Sergeant Gershon Kwame Semexa, Corporal Benjamin Bernard Hayford, Lance Corporal Osei Bonsu, Lance Corporal Abukari Ibrahim and Constable Emmanuel Barabu Gaffah.

4 Karaga NPP leaders arrested

The police in the Northern Region have arrested the Karaga Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Tahidu Zakari, and three others for their alleged involvement in disturbances at Karaga last Monday.

The three other suspects are Baba Ali Osman, Mohammed Alhassan and Abdulai Ziblim.

Only 64 kilometres of railway lines are operational in the country in spite of the fact that the Ghana railway company(GRC) has 1,400 workers on its payroll, the minister of railway development Mr joe Ghartey has said.

Out of the entire stretch of railway lines, 54 kilometres from Nsuta to Kojokrom and about 10 kilometres from Accra to Tema are currently operational.

Footballer jailed for robbing worshippers

A footballer, Misbau Afolabi, who robbed members of the Tabernacle of Hope Church International of monies, mobile phones and laptop during an all-night service has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment by a circuit court in Accra.

This was after the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh found him guilty on the charges of robbery.

Nine killed in clash between Fulani herdsmen and farmers

Nine Fulani herdsmen and some Kwahu farmers including; two brothers have been killed at Dwerebeafe, Aboyan and Mpeamu in the Kwahu East District.

The killings occurred following a clash between Fulani herdsmen and some Kwahu farmers in the bush of those communities.

Less than 10 per cent of Ghanaian children out of school – World Bank report

A new World Bank report on education says in Ghana less than 10 per cent of children of primary age (age six-11) are out of school.

The World Bank Group Education report 2018 dubbed “Facing forward: Schooling with Learning in Africa” said 16 per cent of kids from the poorest quintile were out of school and that there was gender distinction at primary level.

8,000 National Service personnel in trouble

The National Service Secretariat has withheld the allowances of 8,000 National Service personnel for September 2017 on suspicion of impersonation and disqualification.

A statement signed by the acting Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat, Mr Mustapha Ussif, (issued in Accra yesterday) said the allowances of 58,000 personnel had, however, been paid for the month of September 2017.

Michael Sarpong Mfum picks MFWA 10K award

The Brong Ahafo Regional Correspondent of Starr FM, Michael Sarpong Mfum has been adjudged the ultimate winner in Media Foundation for West Africa’s (MFWA) maiden media contest on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reporting in Ghana.
