Wa Methodist KG cries for help

AN appeal has been made to benevolent organisations and the general public to assist the Wa Methodist Kindergarten in the Upper West Region construct a new classroom block.

According to the Headmistress of the school, Ms Emelia Sulemana, the present make-shift structures were no longer fit for use by the little children, pointing out that the main lorry station had been moved closer to the school facility, giving way to encroachers who expose the children to a hostile environment.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in an interview, she said although the compound had been walled, the wall was weak and part of it was broken, creating a big space which had become a thoroughfare for traders and intruders, some of whom were alleged to be engaged in smoking and peddling of drugs, as well as the smoking of Indian hemp, with some of them defecating on the compound and in the classrooms after school hours and on weekends.

Constructed by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in 2005, the structure presently houses the two-block KG, which has 99 pupils, but it has no playing grounds and learning materials.

On the same compound is the Methodist Church, Manse, Methodist Education Unit Office, Saint Paul’s Methodist Basic School, School for the Blind, as well as other offices and residences of officials of the Methodist Mission.

Teaching and learning

Ms Sulemana said the traders and the passers-by disturbed smooth teaching and learning, lamenting that in addition to operating in a hostile environment, the heat emanating from activities of food joints and a nearby pito brewing spot compounded the problem.

The Manageress of the Methodist Education Unit, Mrs Monica Achana, admitted that the present site of the KG block was not good for the pupils, pointing out that there were plans to re-locate the KG and therefore appealed to philanthropists and the public to come to their aid.

According to reports, thieves broke into the office of the headmaster of the primary/junior high school section on July 9, this year, and made away with 17 laptops, after allegedly beating up the security man.

Following the theft, the students are having challenges in learning Information Communication Technology (ICT), an  examinable subject.
