University of Education, Winneba launches 25th anniversary
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Rev. Fr Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, has said the university has attained tremendous achievements and made systematic and sustained progress over the years, making it one of the best public universities in the country.
He said over the past 25 years that the university had been in existence, the institution had seen major infrastructure development on all its four campuses, stressing that “looking into the future, we can only hope for even more impressive contributions which will impact positively on our education delivery.”
Addressing an event to officially launch the university’s silver jubilee celebrations, Rev. Fr Professor Afful-Broni paid glowing tribute to his predecessors for laying a solid foundation for the growth and rapid development of the university.
Theme
The ceremony, which was held at the forecourt of the university’s administration block at its North Campus, was attended by deans, lecturers, senior lecturers, alumni and students of the university.
It was on the theme: “Sustaining quality education in Ghana through effective teacher education: The role of UEW”.
The UEW was established in September 1992 as a University College under PNDC Law 322. On May 14, 2004, the University of Education Act, Act 672 was enacted to upgrade the status of the University College of Education of Winneba to a full university status.
The university has three institutes; namely, the Institute for Distance and E-Learning (IDEL), Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS) and Institute for Teachers Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECTD).
It also has three schools: The School of Creative Arts, School of Business and School of Graduate Studies.
In addition, the university has 11 faculties and over 50 academic departments and centres which run over 200 under-graduate and post-graduate academic programmes on its four campuses.
Infrastructure
Touching on infrastructure, he said a number of projects had been completed to add to the university’s existing infrastructure, and these include a four-storey 514 student capacity hall of residence at the College of Agriculture, Mampong, the construction of a registrar’s official accommodation and the construction of an extension to the Science Block in Winneba.
The rest are the construction of Faculty of Educational Studies block, construction of a School of Creative Arts block, all in Winneba, and the construction of a clinic for the College of Agriculture Education.
He added that a number of projects were ongoing at the various campuses of the university, which were the construction of permanent distance education centres in Kumasi, Cape Coast, Techiman, Koforidua and Hohoe and the construction of a university hospital, commercial centre, hostel block, all in Winneba.
The Chairperson of the Anniversary Planning Committee, Professor Dzansi-McPalm, called on all stakeholders to come on board for a successful organisation of a silver jubilee anniversary.
The University College of Education of Winneba brought together seven diploma awarding colleges located in different towns under one umbrella institution.
These colleges were the Advanced Teacher Training College, the Specialist Training College and the National Academy of Music, all at Winneba; the School of Ghanaian Languages, Ajumako; the College of Special Education, Akwapim-Mampong; the Advanced Technical Training College, Kumasi; and the St Andrews Agricultural Training College, Asante-Mampong.
