Unilever foundation honours 16 students

• Members of the Unilever Ghana Foundation with some of the award winners.  PICTURE: DELLA RUSSEL OCLOOSixteen female graduating students selected from the 10 polytechnics and the six public universities have been  honoured by the Unilever Ghana Foundation, for their academic excellence.

The  award winners were selected by their institutions for coming up tops in their various disciplines in the 2011/2012 academic year, and each of them received a Samsung customised notebook computer and assorted products from Unilever.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Chairman of Unilever foundation, Mr Andrew Evans Quayson, indicated that the initiative of the foundation underscored the crucial role of women in the socio-economic growth and development of every country.

He said the foundation had placed emphasis on the sciences technical and engineering education in line with its objective to continuously find innovative ways of offering value added interventions to further the country's development.

"We do this having in mind that the country needs more professionals in these fields in order to advance and progress," Mr Quayson said.

He further stressed that countries such as China and Malaysia had based their economic development on engineering and that had helped in their tremendous advancement.

"Thus, we at Unilever Foundation believe a strategic focus on the best female human resources will go a long way to facilitate a more progressive development in the years to come," the chairman stressed.

He pledged the foundation's commitment to provide a conducive environment that would enable the young women to favourably compete with their male counterparts in their academic endeavours.
