UDS Wa Campus appeals to SSNIT for construction of hostels

The Principal of the University of Development Studies (UDS), Wa Campus, Professor Amin Alhassan, has appealed to the management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to construct hostel facilities for the Wa Campus of the university in the Upper West Region to cater for the increasing student population.

Prof. Alhassan made the appeal when a delegation of SSNIT, led by the Wa Branch Manager, Mr Hansen Adzor, called on the authorities of the UDS, Wa Campus, to inform them of their intention to register the students under the SSNIT Pension Scheme as part of the first phase of the SSNIT Info Shop.

Making the appeal last Thursday, Prof. Alhassan said apart from being a corporate social responsibility (CSR), the gesture would be a viable investment.

“I commend SSNIT for the huge investments in students’ accommodation in tertiary institutions across the country.

I am appealing to the management of the SSNIT to consider putting up hostels on the UDS Wa Campus to cater for the increasing student population. This is not just a CSR, but a good source of investment returns,” he said.

SSNIT Info Shop

The visit to the Wa Campus is part of SSNIT Info Shop Phase One under which it hopes to register at least 5,000 students from five universities under its pension scheme.

The SSNIT Info Shop, a joint programme being organised by the SSNIT and University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), is targeted at educating students on their rights to social security and preparing them to take interest in retirement planning even before they start working.

It also affords them the opportunity to register into the scheme and for workers on the campuses to perform various transactions with the SSNIT.

The five institutions are the UDS, University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast and Methodist University College of Ghana.

Gratitude

While expressing his gratitude to the team for selecting the Wa Campus as part of the first phase of the SSNIT Info Shop, Prof. Alhassan commended SSNIT for its efforts in providing some institutions with accommodation facilities and hoped that they would also be included.

According to Mr Adzor, their mission was to register the students and provide them with biometric cards.

He said it was on the theme: “Your Security for Tomorrow” under which the students would be advised to immediately start planning for their retirement.

On behalf of the team, he promised to extend the appeal to officials of SSNIT for consideration.
