UCC wins Public Speaking Competition

The University of Cape Coast (UCC), School of Medical Sciences has emerged winner of this year’s Inter-Medical School Public Speaking Competition hosted by the university.

The university beat the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Ghana and University for Development Studies (UDS) to win the honour.

The competition, which was on the topic: “Child Sexual Abuse in Ghana: The Extent of the Problem, Consequences and Proposed Solution”, was organised by St Patrick’s Mental Health Services.

The Vice Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, commended participants for exhibiting confidence in their delivery, describing the whole exercise as “very exciting”.

He said the debate served as a motivation for more attention to be paid to that sector, adding that “we need to propagate the news for the authority to take mental health seriously”.

A Psychiatrist, Dr Kwadwo Obeng, said one of the greatest challenges facing the mental health service was the need to retain mental health personnel in the service, stressing that the “number of entries to this service is minimal”.
