Twenty-Three Africans receive Australian Scholarship

Twenty-three professionals from Ghana, Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire have been awarded Australian Scholarships to undertake fully-funded studies in Australia.

The beneficiaries, comprising 21 Ghanaians, a Sierra Leonean and an Ivorian, are part of the 156 scholars selected across Africa to receive the prestigious Australian Government scholarship this year.

The recipients will begin their studies in diverse fields, including public policy, engineering, mining, environmental studies, health, education, governance, agriculture and disability studies from January 2019.

The Australian High Commissioner in Accra, Mr Andrew Barnes, commended the beneficiaries for their successful selection, at the opening of a two-day workshop to prepare them ahead of their departure to Australia.

"You have demonstrated the leadership potential required to advance development in Africa and we are delighted that you will have this opportunity to develop your talents and expertise in Australia and we are confident that you will make an important contribution to national and regional development upon your return home," he said.

Worthy ambassadors

Mr Barnes, who recounted Australia's credentials as a nation of boundless opportunities, challenged the scholars to take advantage of the opportunity to establish lasting personal, professional, and cultural links during their stay in that country.

"Be worthy ambassadors for your countries in Australia and I encourage you to return home with new skills and passion to contribute to the development of your countries," he advised.

Scholarship

The Australian awards is a flagship development assistance programme of the Australian Government, providing world-class postgraduate training opportunities for African professionals.

It provides prestigious, all-expenses-paid Master's and professional short course scholarships to exceptional African candidates in areas where Australia has known expertise.
