Teacher commitment key to quality education

A retired educationist, Mr A. B. Amoatey, has stated that teacher commitment was key to the attainment of quality education at any level.

Delivering the guest speaker’s address at the Yilo Krobo Quadrennial delegates conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on the theme “education in crisis, the way forward”, Mr Amoatey said the teacher played a key role in the delivery of quality education and that, his or her performance could not be compromised.

“Our teachers need to renew their minds and motivate themselves and perform their duties. Nobody, no government, no philanthropist can pay for the services of a teacher. It is only God who can compensate you for what you do.” Mr Amoatey added.

Quoting from the white paper on the report of the Education Review Committee in 2004, Mr Amoatey, who retired as the director of education of the Yilo Krobo Municipality, noted that the current government policy on education  was geared towards training students and pupils to acquire knowledge and values, to become functionally productive citizens.

He, however, mentioned lack of funds, inadequate infrastructure, access, large numbers of female dropouts, teacher attrition, lack of effective supervision, inadequate textbooks, and hostile attitudes of members in school communities, as challenges that faced quality education delivery.

He urged the government, through the various agencies, to formulate good and achievable education policies, finance education, give teachers the needed logistics to enhance their work in the classrooms.

The Municipal Director of Education, Madam Theresa Adermoah, who was represented by the Deputy Director of Education in charge of Monitoring and Supervision, Madam Augustina Dedo Odonkor, said most of the teachers these days dodged subjects and topics they considered difficult thereby leaving their pupils /students stranded, and appealed to the teachers to show real commitment to their profession.

She also urged teachers to read wide and be abreast of developments in education and classroom practices in order to be good initiators and innovators to guide their students/ pupils.

The Deputy Regional GNAT Secretary, M. Samuel Mawuena Cody, appealed to the government to show commitment to paying all outstanding vehicle maintenance allowances for 2012 and promotion arrears.

New executive members were elected to steer the affairs of the Yilo Krobo Municipality for the next four years. They were chairman, Mr Iddrisu Adamtey Kweku, Vice Chairman, M. Dan Timika Sandy, Trustee, Mr George Bedu, Treasurer, Ms Patience Kateo Awuviri and GNATLAS Representative, Ms Victoria Affram. The rest were, second cycle schools representative, Mr Emmanuel Twum, Basic Schools representative, Mr James Atteh, GES representative, Mr Kwame Benjamin, Colleges of Education Representative, Mr Daniel Ashia and Youth Co-ordinator, Ms Believe Amoah.
