Shifa wins National Spelling Bee contest

A 12-year-old pupil of Nagie’s Angels Education Centre, Shifa Amankwa-Gabbey, received an overwhelming welcome from the management, teachers and pupils of her school for winning this year’s Indomie Spelling Bee.

This is the first time a pupil from a school in the Ashanti Region has been adjudged the winner at the national level since the inception of the spelling competition.

Shifa Amankwa-Gabbey and her proud parents,  Mr Kassim Amankwa-Gabbey and Madam Diata Soalihu.

Shifa will join other winners across the globe in May this year for the International spelling competition which would be held in the United States of America (USA).

The competition was organised by the Young Education Foundation and sponsored by Indomie Ghana Limited.

Eight pupils, together with Shifa, were selected from the Nagie’s Angels Educational Centre to compete with pupils from other schools in Ghana for the national competition in which she distinguished herself and won the ultimate prize.

Together with her parents, Mr Kassim Amankwa-Gabbey and Madam Diata Soalihn, Shifa expressed her gratitude to the school for the overwhelming reception accorded her and was grateful to her teachers, especially her English teacher and coach, Mr Seth Kofi Owusu for his assistance.

The Administrator of the school, Dr Franchesca Katherine Afoakwa, said the school was celebrating its 27th anniversary and added that the achievement was a perfect and wonderful birthday present for the celebration.

It was, indeed, a joyous occasion for pupils and students of the Nagie’s Angels Educational Centre, when they paraded through some principal streets in Kumasi to celebrate Shifa’s victory.

She described Shifa as a brilliant, hard working and confident pupil and was optimistic that she would achieve a lot in future.

Later, the administrator, together with Shifa’s parents, teachers and some selected pupils, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Santasi-Anyinam where the school is located to introduce her to the chief and elders.

Pupils and students of the Nagie’s Angels Educational Centre applauding Shifa on her arrival to school.

Nana Adu Baafi III, Chief of Santasi-Anyinam praised the school for such an enviable feat and said he believed it would assist in projecting the Anyinam community and encouraged others also to aim high and achieve greater things.
