Rotary Club of Accra Labone donates reading books to schools
The Rotary Club of Accra Labone as part of its programme to promote reading habit among school children has presented 1,500 supplementary reading materials to 12 selected public schools in the Labone-Nima enclave in the Greater Accra Region.
The gesture, worth GH¢10, 000 and forms part of the club’s project dubbed: “The Reading Project” is aimed at encouraging children to develop a positive attitude towards reading and writing. It was funded by the Ghana Manganese, dealers in manganese ore.

The schools were La Yahoshua; Association Basic School; Nima 1 Basic School; Nima 2 Basic School; 37 Military Hospital Basic School; Ring Road East ‘1’ Basic school; Al Waheed Basic School, and Flagstaff House Basic School.
Others were Ring Road East ‘2’ Basic school; Islamic Training Institute School; Kanda Estate ‘5’ Basic school, and Kanda Estate ‘1’ Basic school.
The President of Rotary Club of Accra Labone, Mr George Agyekum at a brief ceremony held at the Kanda Cluster of Schools to present the books to the beneficiary schools, expressed optimism that the gesture would improve reading skills among the pupils.

He said the gesture would help “in bridging the dwindling reading habits among pupils in basic schools,” particularly those in public schools.
He, therefore, encouraged the pupils to make good use of the books, adding that it was sad that many pupils in public schools could not read or write.
Mr Agyekum said phase one of ‘The Reading Project’ targeted pupils in lower primary and that the phase two is targeting pupils in upper primary.
The Deputy Director in charge of Supervision at the Accra Metro Education Office, Madam Esi Asigbetse, commended the club for the gesture and pledged that the education directorate would ensure that the books were put to good use.

She said giving children good education would not only guarantee a brighter future for them alone but the country as a whole.
The Kanda Circuit Supervisor, Mr Israel Martei said reading and comprehension formed the basis of any academic discipline, adding that the Circuit has been organizing quizzes for the pupils in the beneficiary schools with the donated as part of measures to encourage them to read.
He, therefore, encouraged the club to continue to assist the schools, pointing out that reading performance of pupils in the beneficiary schools has improved since they received the first bunch of the books last year.
