Private BECE attracts large number of candidates

Hundreds of young people last Monday converged on the newly constructed West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Heights Building in Accra to take part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for private candidates.

The candidates, numbering 1,106, are part of a total number of 11,856 candidates registered to write the Private BECE this year.

This year’s total candidature of 11,856 represents an increase of 739 per cent over last year’s figure of 1,379.

In 2016, 1,418 wrote the examination while 1,181 candidates sat for the maiden examination.

The BECE for private candidates began smoothly throughout the country last Monday with candidates writing English Language and Religious and Moral Education.

They wrote Integrated Science and Basic Design and Technology (BDT) yesterday. The candidates are expected to write Mathematics and Ghanaian Language today, Wednesday, February 14.

A number of adult candidates were seen writing the examination which is both for first timers and resitters.

The Head of National Office of WAEC, Very Rev. Samuel Nmai Ollennu, who was at the centre to observe the examination, said the council had not received any complaints anywhere in the country.

“So far the examination has been smooth and all the candidates are comporting themselves very well,” he said.

Asked about the candidates who had reported late due to the new venue for the examination, he said, “We have asked the supervisors to allow everyone to write even if the person comes late.”

Very Rev. Ollennu believed the awareness created over the years had resulted in the massive interest shown this year hence the large number of candidates who registered for the examination.

One of the candidates, Stephen Tetteh, 21, said he was trying his hands on the examination after writing it six years ago but performed poorly.

“I came from Ablekuma that is why I am late but I am determined to write it. If I perform well I would want to go to a secondary technical school to learn a trade in metal and fabrications,” he said.

A total of 11,856 candidates comprising 6,866 males and 4,989 females are writing this year’s examination at 44 centres with 44 supervisors across the country.

The BECE for private candidates is to enable candidates, who desire to improve on their grades in the exam as well as others who have never written the examination but desire to pursue formal education to register and sit for the exam.

The Private BECE ends on Friday, February 16, 2018.
