New classroom block for Zagyuri School

The chiefs and people of Zagyuri, a suburb of the Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region have been provided with a three-unit classroom block to replace an old structure that posed danger to the lives of the pupils of the Anglican Primary School in the community.

Before the construction of the three-unit classroom block, the pupils in the school had to close from school anytime it threatened to rain due to the cracks in the walls of the existing classroom block and for fear of it collapsing on the pupils.

The facility

The three-unit classroom block, which has an office and a store attached to it and furnished with tables and chairs for teachers, as well as dual desks for the pupils, also comes with textbooks and reading materials to enhance access to educational facilities in the area.

The project was funded by the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC), a child-centred non governmental organisation (NGO) and implemented by its partner, Markaz-Al Bishara (MAB) which forms part of its child development programme aimed at supporting communities with serene educational facilities to promote education.

Inauguration

Inaugurating the facility at Zagyuri, the Country Director of CCFC, Mr George Baiden, appealed to stakeholders to show interest and invest in education at the various communities to ensure a stronger early foundation for children.

He urged parents to cooperate with teachers to effectively address the educational challenges likely to hinder the development of children in the community to improve the quality of life of the children to become better future leaders.

The visiting Chief International Programme Officer of CCFC, Dr Belinda Bennet, for her part, pledged the commitment of CCFC to provide a conducive environment for every child to grow and achieve his or her full potential in life.

The Programmes Manager of MAB, Mrs Patricia Gyan-Klu, said the partnership of the two NGOs sought to create a future of hope for children, families and communities in attaining the needed skills and resources to overcome poverty and injustice in societies.

She said there was the need for children to acquire the needed skills and knowledge in a more safe, serene and conducive environment to help in their early development.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sagnarigu, Madam Mariam Iddrisu, said the government, and for that matter, the municipal assembly, had prioritised education and would collaborate with development partners such as CCFC and MAB to provide modern infrastructure in schools to ensure quality education in the municipality.

The Headmistress of the Zagyuri Anglican Primary School, Mrs Bawa Ayamga Rukaya, lauded CCFC and MAB for their enormous strides geared towards giving the school a facelift to promote education in the community.
