Majority Leader advocates stiffer sanctions for teachers

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has advocated for the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to institute much more punitive sanctions for teachers who sexually abuse students.

He explained that such sanctions could be in the form of revocation of the certificate of the teacher, paying compensation to the student before being handed a jailed term based on the merits of the case.

Mr Mensah-Bonsu disclosed this in an interview on the sidelines of commissioning a 6-classrooom block for the Kronum-Kwapra Presbyterian Basic School at Suame, Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

Other projects

The Majority Leader who is the Member of Parliament for the Suame constituency, had earlier inspected other projects such as a new police station at Afrancho which was about 90 per cent complete, and another renovated school block at Afrancho due for inauguration soon.

All the projects are being funded with the MP’s share of the common fund to help improve the lives of the constituents.

Mr Mensah-Bonsu said apart from the revocation of the license to teach again, such teachers could also be banned from working in any form of public sector or any state-owned job opportunities so it would make such nefarious acts unattractive to others with similar intents.

Deterrent

These sanctions, he said, if introduced by the MoE and the GES, will help to deal with the current canker in the teaching profession and also serve as a deterrent to others.

The Majority Leader who is also the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, said the Inspectorate Division of the GES used to be very vibrant but the situation has changed now leading to many lapses.

“The Inspectorate Unit used to monitor schools, teachers and the children as well and this brought some fear and sanity into the teachers and the various stakeholders under them”, he said.
