‘Inculcate habit of reading in children’

The Rebecca Foundation, a non-governmental organisation,  has launched a project in Accra to promote the culture of reading among children.

The project, which was on the theme:”Learning to read, reading to learn” would help children develop the habit of reading, writing and also acquire the skills to engage in critical thinking.

The First Lady and Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo said  many pupils in Ghana could not read or write English and other Ghanaian languages, therefore, there was the need to build libraries to provide reading materials for children  to address the situation.

She announced that as part of the project, the foundation would broadcast a reading programme on Ghana Television (GTV) starting from Saturday, October 27.

 “The television programme would be a weekly reading engagement and interaction between some adults and children to expose the children to the great works of some Ghanaian writers”, she added.

The First Lady urged parents to establish a culture of reading with their children at home and also encouraged children to develop the habit of reading a book a day as well as building upon their vocabulary.

The Minister of Education, Mr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Director of Pre-Tertiary Education, Ms Catherine Appiah-Dinkrah, said the ministry would support the initiative by ensuring that children developed interest in reading and writing so as to increase the literacy level in the country.
