Groupe Ideal to assist UCC establish School of Economics

GROUPE Ideal, a Ghanaian financial institution, is to collaborate with the Department of Economics, University of Cape Coast (UCC) to establish a School of Economics through the provision of logistics and resource support.

The President of the institution, Dr Nii Kotei Dzani, announced this when he donated 35 computers and accessories valued at GH¢91,000 to the Department of Economics of the UCC in Cape Coast.

The computers included 30 desktops and five laptops, as well as printers and accessories. The donation was in fulfilment of a pledge made by the president to the university which is his alma mater.

Positive transformation

Dr Dzani expressed optimism that the transformation would positively affect the country's economic growth, as well as the sub-region through research.

" For 60 years, we are unable to predict the country’s economic development, leaving it to politicians to toy with," he said.

He said the country’s quest to develop its human resource base could only materialise if more was invested in education of its citizenry, adding that "this is my motivation for donating to the institution."

Dr Dzani, who is also a member of the Council of State, said it was not money that made one rich but the level of the mind and how that could be put for the benefit of the majority of the people.

The Vice Chancellor of the UCC, Prof. Joseph Ghartey-Ampiah, pledged to support the company to go through the process of transforming the department to a full-fledged School of Economics.

He said the donation came at a time when the department was in dire need of the items and expressed gratitude to the financial institution for its benevolence.

The vice chancellor said the university had presented a paper to its academic board for consideration, adding that "we are confident that Groupe Ideal will become a business partner of the UCC."

Dr Dzani also used the occasion to interact with students of the department and urged them to make their stay in the university a fruitful one.
