Groom students with patriotism and integrity - Presiding Bishop of Methodist

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, has charged stakeholders in the educational sector to safeguard the principles of hard work, integrity and patriotism to groom the required manpower needed for the country's development.

He said as a means to safeguard values, all stakeholders must seek to preserve and protect these values and ensure that they are strictly inculcated in the products they produce in order to achieve excellent result that the educational sector needed.

“As we look forward to safeguarding the holistic education our forefathers left us, these principles which were foundational must be part and parcel of us,” he added.

Most Rev Dr Boafo was speaking at the 182nd Anniversary Speech and Prize Giving Day of Wesley Girls’ High School which was on the theme: “Safeguarding the Vision of our Founding Mothers - The Way to Achieving Holistic Education” in Cape Coast on Saturday, February 9, 2019.

He called on teachers to instill the right virtues into their students so as to create a future generation that would grow the nation.

Most Rev Dr Boafo paid tribute to the founding mothers of the school who ensured that girls received total education despite the challenges of the time.

He also commended the Old Girls’ Association and Parent Teachers Association for their immense contribution and support to the smooth running of the school.

He said the church would contribute its quota to ensure help provide the needs of the school.

Responsibilities

A Human Resource Practitioner and Gender Advocate, Ms Atawa Dzabea Akyea, an old student and guest speaker for the occasion urged Ghanaians to be aware of their responsibilities to their communities and the broader society to which they belong.

She said if this was done people would be more patriotic and have the progress of the country at heart.

“If our responsibilities are to our homes, communities, the broader society and our nation Ghana, why would you start up an institution or rent a house and charge fees in dollars or collect rent in dollars when payment can be done in our local currency? She quizzed.

Values

Ms Akyea further admonished past and present students of the school to uphold the immeasurable values of the school.

“We have an obligation to uphold the future of our alma mater by living pure and virtuous lives, speaking true and kind words and always righting wrongs to redress conflict situations”, she said.

Headmistress

In her report, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Kay Oppong-Ankomah, commended teachers and students for their hard work in ensuring there was improvement in the results of the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

She said there was an increase in percentage passes of As and Bs in Mathematics, Physics, Elective Mathematics, Economics, Geography, French, Graphic Design, Business Management, Christian Religious Studies, Music, Physics and Social Studies.

“There was an improvement in the overall results with 90.26 per cent passes in As and Bs as against 88.83 percent of the previous year”, she added.
Mrs Oppong-Ankomah called on stakeholders to assist in addressing the needs of the school such as additional staff accommodation for teachers of the school.

Some Old Girls at the event 

She said the school science block was in need of science equipment and fixtures and fittings to enable the students learn well considering the increase in the number of science students in the school.

An Executive Member of Societe General Ghana, Mrs Dorcas Adwoa Hazel Quaye, who was the Lady President of the occasion, advised students to abide by the precepts of the school while upholding it's motto.

Presentations

The 1998 year group, the main year group sponsoring the celebration presented the school with a refurbished home economics practice flat, 10,000 litre polytank with a booster machine installed.

They also upgraded the school field by providing drains and also constructed a nine-seater washroom facility, 12-seater Bio fill wash room and refurbished the Research Laboratory for staff. Other sponsoring year groups included the 1968, 1978, 1988 year groups.

The Member of Parliament of the Cape Coast North Constituency, Mrs Barbara Asher Ayisi also presented the school with 20 pieces of Street light and a cash donation of GHC 5,000 for teachers of the school.

Teachers and students who excelled in their various fields of endeavour were presented with prizes.
